On Friday, 21-month-old Madeline Reid succumbed to the effects of Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), while being treated at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit (CHMD). She is the state's first recorded death from EV-D68, according to officials with the Michigan Department of Community Health.
CHMD chief medical officer, Dr. Rudolph Valentini, told the Associated Press:
It is never easy to lose a child, and our entire health care team at the Children's Hospital of Michigan is deeply saddened by this family's loss and mourns with them during this very difficult time.
The toddler had been on life support since Sept. 14, as the virus caused organ failure, according to Madeline's family.

This little girl is only the latest child to die from EV-D68...
Last week, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirmed that 4-year-old Eli Waller, died in his sleep in New Jersey from EV-D68. So, far there have been at least five children who have died from this virus.
As of Oct. 10, 2014, there have been 691 confirmed cases of EV-D68 across 46 states and the District of Columbia, reported the CDC.
Of course, that number only accounts for those patients who have been tested for the virus, with CDC confirmation. The actual number of infections now number in the thousands. Dozens of children have also been left with permanent lung disease as well as limb paralysis as a result of contracting EV-D68.
A link between this virus, now afflicting children across the country, and the recent surge of so-called 'unaccompanied minors' into this country from Central America was recently discovered, as EV-D68 was found to be present in that region during a 2013 study.
While the Ebola virus is getting most of the public's attention, EV-D68 is currently ravaging its way through this nation's children, leaving them paralyzed, and in a few cases, dead. So, why is the national press largely ignoring this expanding threat to our most vulnerable citizens?
Could it be that the fault for the spread of this not-so 'kid friendly' virus can be laid directly at the feet of President Obama, and his open-door policy with illegal aliens?
