ROMA - Authorities say an ice cream vendor was using his van to haul drugs.

Border Patrol found 22 bundles of marijuana inside the van in Roma. Border Patrol Spokesman Oscar Saldana said smugglers are using new tactics.

"That's out of the ordinary ... not the usual vehicle traffic like you see in that area," Saldana said.

A similar incident happened in Mission four years ago. Police said a man was hauling marijuana in an empty ice cream truck.
The van in Roma still had snacks along with the drugs.

Saldana said the driver bailed when agents approached him. He swam across the river to Mexico.

Agents were able to get some information.

"We do have ... information from the vehicle, including the license plate and VIN. All of that is being gathered and properly investigated by the authorities," Saldana said.
