Democrats boycott Coke, Walmart over voter ID laws

Democratic officials Wednesday launched a two-pronged attack on states with new laws requiring identification before voting, the highlight being a call to boycott Coke, Walmart and others that back a leading organization pushing for voter ID laws.
“We are organizing. We are not agonizing,” said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., who is leading a parallel Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s effort to get government identification into the hands of the estimated 2-3 million Democrats who don’t have one. “We have staffed up,” he said.
Officials from another party-backed group, Color of Change, kicked off a boycott of Coke and other financial backers of the American Legislative Exchange Council which supports new voter ID laws. Other supporters include Walmart and Koch Industries. The boycott call started with a tweet (@CocaCola is helping undermine voting rights. Tell them to stop) and a webpage. The group also has tied the Council to the Trayvon Martin shooting case.
Those efforts came on the heels of a new report released Wednesday by the Center for American Progress condemning new voter identification laws in Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Kansas and Wisconsin.
The group complained that some states want to limit the time allotted for early voting, bar ex-felons from voting and require government identification to vote. Polls show that most Americans back the laws. But Clyburn compared them to segregation era "Jim Crow" laws and he said that he is “very, very anxious” that the conservative Supreme Court “as it is presently constituted” will support the new anti-voter fraud laws.
Despite the complaints, several states attorneys claim that voter fraud is a growing concern, adding that requiring voters to show identification is not overly burdensome.

Examiner Fails to Note Soros’ Funding of Voter ID Controversy
By Mike Ciandella | April 05, 2012 | 10:19
Paul Bedard of the Washington Examiner wrote a piece entitled “Democrats boycott Coke, Walmart over voter ID laws” on April 4. The piece reported the situation well, with one exception: it didn’t mention that one side of the voter identification debate is almost completely fought by Soros-backed organizations.
The focus of the article was on a push by Color of Change, the Center for American Progress and democratic lawmakers to boycott Walmart, Coca Cola and other companies who financially contribute to one of the new voter ID laws’ biggest supporters: the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC, as Bedard pointed out, is also supported by Koch Industries.
According to Open Society’s website, Color of Change is a project of Citizen Engagement Link, which received $550,000 from the Open Society Foundation (OSF) since 2009. The Center for American Progress has received over $5.7 million from Soros’ OSF since 2006.
Florida, Texas, Tennessee, Kansas and Wisconsin are all considering laws requiring voters to present photo IDs upon arrival. Most of these states currently require only a signed statement affirming that the person voting is who they say that they are.
According to Bedard, an estimated 2-3 million democratic voters do not have a photo ID.

Coca-Cola Caves to Left Wing Bullying, Drops from Conservative Group
April 5, 2012
By Ben Shapiro, Breitbart.com
In an attack on voter ID laws around the nation, Democratic officials called for a boycott of Coca-Cola, Walmart, and other organizations that supported the American Legislative Exchange Council. Within five hours of the boycott threat, Coke had backed down, removing its funding from ALEC. They said:
The Coca-Cola Company has elected to discontinue its membership with the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). Our involvement with ALEC was focused on efforts to oppose discriminatory food and beverage taxes, not on issues that have no direct bearing on our business. We have a long-standing policy of only taking positions on issues that impact our Company and industry.
