Joliet woman found stabbed in basement

Joliet basement stabbing kills pregnant woman

    By Brian Stanley
    Staff Writer

JOLIET — A pregnant woman was found slain Sunday in the basement of a residence she and her husband were sharing with two other families.

Regina De Los Santos, 23, was found by her husband in the basement living quarters of 504 Kraker Ave. shortly after 2 a.m. She had been stabbed multiple times.

The De Los Santoses were one of three families, a total of eight adults and two children, living in the single-family residence.

Police Chief Fred Hayes said the rear door of the house showed signs of forced entry.

"There was one person at home during the time of the attack and this person told us they did not see or hear anything unusual during the time of the attack," Hayes said.

Hayes said the last person to report seeing De Los Santos alive was her husband when he left for work Saturday morning. He visited a local tavern with friends after work and returned home shortly after 2 a.m. He called 911 immediately upon finding his wife had been attacked.

Investigators said the De Los Santoses had been living in Joliet for approximately two years and knew the other families in the house from Mexico. Regina De Los Santos was believed to be six months pregnant.

During their investigation, police arrested a resident of the house on two unrelated counts of forgery. Gabriel Sanchez, 40, was booked into the county jail after he was found in possession of altered Social Security and alien resident cards.

Hayes said investigators have conducted interviews and developed a person of interest in the homicide, but would not say they have identified a suspect. Police are also investigating the legal status of all the residents of the house, including the De Los Santoses.

"This is a pretty troubling case where a young pregnant woman was brutally attacked, but we are working vigorously and have developed a person of interest," Hayes said. "I'm very optimistic our investigation will lead us to identify an offender."

Send all the illegals back! Chances are they are all illegals as there were so many of them in one home. It is something they do all the time and hda the nerve to tell Americans that we should allow them to have numerous families living in one house or condo. If you don't want to live by our rules.....GO HOME!

These people have to be deported and this nonsence stopped. I don't know how they could have reported crime was at a 32 year low when this nonsence is rampent.

Zoning laws? We don't need no stinking zoning laws!

No we do not need zoning laws as we already have them but they need to be enforced, the illegals need to be reported to ICE and have their butts kicked out of this country.
