New Mexican immigration fiasco as truck carrying hundreds of US visas is hijacked near the border

A truck carrying hundreds of new US visas has been hijacked in northern Mexico and the visas inside have been stolen, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico has confirmed.

The embassy said in a statement Wednesday that the theft occurred on June 7 'in northern Mexico,' without specifying where.

The truck vanished in Matamoros, a city located on the southern bank of the Rio Grande directly across the border from Brownsville, Texas.

It was making a trip from the United States to U.S. Consulates in the cities of Monterrey and Guadalajara.

Stolen: A truck carrying hundreds of visas for Mexican nationals was stolen on Tuesday on the road to Monterrey

Some approved border crossing cards also were stolen.

An electronic alert has been issued so that the stolen cards cannot be used to cross the border.

The cards were re-issued for the intended holders, but they have also been advised of the robbery in case the cards are used in attempts at identity theft.

The US diplomatic mission warned that personal data in the applications could be used for criminal activities, Sputnik News reported.

Mexican police suspect that smugglers need the papers to traffic people illegally across the border.

Scene: The truck was close to the Puerta Mexico border checkpoint, which crosses over to Brownsville in Texas.

Not a whole lot of details, purposely. I'm sure. Bit also sounds like inside information flowed from somewhere to somebody.

Hijackers Seize 11,500 Border Crossing Cards on US, Mexico Border

    PatrickPoendl/iStock/Thinkstock

(MATAMOROS, Mexico) -- The State Department said on Wednesday that criminals in Mexico hijacked a U.S. truck carrying over 11,500 border crossing cards, forms of identification issued to Mexican citizens used as a sort of visa required for crossing into the U.S.

The truck was apparently moving from the United States to U.S. consulates in Monterrey and Guadalajara when it was attacked on June 7.

The State Department said it is taking the incident seriously, but is downplaying the threat that these cards could be used by Mexican citizens to enter the country illegally.

The agency says the BCCs, each about the size of a credit card, have multiple security features that would prevent anyone from using them fraudulently.

“The Bureau of Consular Affairs has entered electronic lookouts against all of the stolen BCCs, which will prevent them from being used at any port of entry,” State Department spokesman John Taylor said in a statement to ABC News.

A separate State Department official said it’s possible there could be some risk of identity theft, but that threat doesn’t apply to Americans since these cards are not issued to American citizens since they use passports to cross the border.
