The DHS responsibilities go far beyond border interdiction, no matter if that is the portion that we here are most concerned about. The department was started in the wake of the 9/11 attacks, so it's a big and important job. I think we know that Trump's inexpertise hobbles him at many times in the tricky currents of Washington politics. So he has had to rely upon the GOP establishment to flesh out his administration while seeking to give greater weight to the populist and alt right elements. It's gonna be far from perfect, meanwhile radical Democrats still (at least rhetorically) keep pressing for his removal.
