Trump’s veto threats shape Senate debate on immigration

Trump’s veto threats shape Senate debate on immigration

By Stephen Dinan - The Washington Times - Sunday, February 11, 2018

All eyes will be on President Trump this week as the Senate begins its immigration debate, with Republicans hoping the White House will play an active role in ruling out proposals he won’t accept, making it likelier he will get a bill he can sign.

The first test vote will occur Monday as senators vote to bring up a placeholder piece of legislation and then begin to offer their proposals as amendments.

How that will play out remains to be seen, but senators were pushing over the weekend to get plans ready.

The latest is an offer from Republican Senate leaders, led by Sens. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa and John Cornyn of Texas, which enshrines Mr. Trump’s four-point framework with an enforcement-heavy proposal. It would couple citizenship rights for perhaps 1.8 million Dreamers with some of the biggest enforcement changes in two decades.

“This is a rare opportunity to fix a real problem and protect the country in a thoughtful and compassionate way,” Mr. Grassley said. “We simply have to correct the loopholes in current law that allow dangerous criminals to enter and remain at large in our country.”

He said their bill has the backing of Mr. Trump — which is more than any of the other proposals being batted about in the Senate.

“This is a rare opportunity to fix a real problem and protect the country in a thoughtful and compassionate way,” Mr. Grassley said. “We simply have to correct the loopholes in current law that allow dangerous criminals to enter and remain at large in our country.”
Senator Grassley, enforcing our laws isn't just about dangerous criminals, it's about all illegal aliens, those who come here and steal jobs from Americans, who steal seats in our colleges and universities, and who steal publicly funded or tax subsidized benefits and poverty assistance from all Americans. I know the mantras focus on these awful killers and gang bangers and terrorists, but the real issue to Americans is far more than that, much broader than that. Americans are entitled to wake up every day and go to their jobs with the assurance that their job will not be stolen from them by an illegal alien. American students are entitled to wake up every day do their homework, go to class, graduate from high school, and if they want, apply for a seat in a college or university with the assurance that their seat will not be stolen from them by an illegal alien. American taxpayers are entitled to wake up every day and work and earn and pay their taxes with the assurance that not one dime of their hard earned money is being stolen by illegal aliens to fund birthing, medical care, food assistance, low income housing, WIC, TANF or any other benefit whether to be used by themselves or their offspring.

Americans are being cheated out of their jobs, educations and public resources. Americans are being impoverished and put in public debt that they owe, not illegal aliens, that not only didn't benefit them, it hurt them. It cost them jobs, wages, hours, educations and a public debt soaring past $21 trillion with absolutely nothing, NOTHING, to show for it. The massive rise in non-retiree entitlement spending has soared because of illegal immigration as well as massive excessive legal immigration.

Maybe in Iowa, this is not so obvious, but it is obvious in most every other state and most communities throughout our country. You must be honest about the scope and breadth of this issue, it's not just about the "dangerous criminals", it's about the illegal presence of every single illegal alien in the United States that takes a spot, a seat, a job, a dollar, a business, a livelihood and yes even from time to time a life from an American citizen.

So very well said . Americans are suffering from lost wages , higher taxes and insurance premiums , overcrowded schools and hospitals , etc. not due to the “criminal” element of illegal immigration. It is the displacement of Americans in favor of illegal aliens throughout the heartland that the American people need stopped.
Trump voters weren’t supporting him just to get the “criminals”out; we need relief from all illegal immigration!

Yes! And I think in the effort to prioritize resources that presently due to their limitations takes too much attention to the criminals and not enough on the rest who are still lawbreakers causing harm to citizens by stealing our jobs, deflating our wages, stealing college seats and using public resources they aren't entitled to.

SPREAD THE WORD!! Make sure these SWAMP CREATURES understand, it's NOT JUST THE DANGEROUS CRIMINALS, it's all of them.

It appears it is limited to those they deem crinimals.

A few real high profile raids and/or notices to businesses that there is zero tolerance for illegal alien hiring would garner results. When information is sent out to businesses and when they do their taxes online there should be a pop up of some type to remind employers that illegal hiring is against the law and may result in fines and/or jail time. They should be told that a raid by ICE or an investigation of I-9 forms may be a result of suspected illegal hiring.
    Matthew 19:26
But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

A tweet would do the same thing and be a lot cheaper and faster and probably more newsworthy. You know how that media loves the Trump Tweets. 140 or so characters from Trump in a 9 pm tweet, stays in the news for weeks.
