The feds will house 360 unaccompanied migrant children in so-called tent cities at the Tornillo port of entry along the Rio Grande, after announcing temporary shelters could be built outside Texas military bases.
The Trump administration will move the children into “soft-sided structures with air conditioning” at the border crossing about 30 miles southeast of El Paso, with the possibility of housing more kids in the future, a Department of Health and Human Services spokesman said.
The agency announced Tuesday that it was assessing three southwest Texas military bases to house the shelters, including Fort Bliss and Dyess and Goodfellow Air Force Bases, amid a surge of children and families entering the country without legal permission. In some cases, the government has separated children from their parents, who have been detained.
The spokesman said Department of Defense and Health and Human Services officials were slated to visit the three bases for their “potential use as temporary shelters.”
Those sites are still under consideration, the official said.
The spokesman said the federal agency already has 100 shelters in 14 states.
