The Trump administration is planning to build 250 miles of border fence in South Texas, according to the office of U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Laredo.
The construction is proposed in the president’s request for $25 billion for border security, which he’s asked for as part of a package to legalize nearly 2 million young immigrants who are in the country illegally.
The new construction would be primarily between Laredo and Brownsville, according Cuellar’s office. The information was given to Cuellar in briefings by Department of Homeland Security officials, his office said.
The details come a day after President Trump focused much of his State of the Union speech on immigration. He has demanded money for the border wall in exchange for legalizing “Dreamers,” young undocumented immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children.
