State Department says US cutting off aid to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras

    By Greg Clary, CNN
Updated 1:48 PM ET, Sat March 30, 2019

(CNN)The United States is cutting off aid to the Northern Triangle, otherwise known as the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, the State Department told CNN Saturday, one day after President Donald Trump said they had "set up" migrant caravans for entry into the United States.

"We were paying them tremendous amounts of money. And we're not paying them anymore. Because they haven't done a thing for us. They set up these caravans," Trump said Friday.
"At the Secretary's instruction, we are carrying out the President's direction and ending FY 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle," a State Department spokesperson said. "We will be engaging Congress as part of this process."

On Wednesday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen signed what she called a "first of its kind" regional compact agreement with the Northern Triangle countries aimed at preventing irregular migration, combating criminal organizations and ultimately helping with US border security.

Trump threatened to cut off or substantially reduce aid to the Northern Triangle before saying in an October tweet the countries, "were not able to do the job of stopping people from leaving their country and coming illegally to the US."

But experts have said cutting off aid is likely to increase the number of migrants leaving the countries and heading for the United States.

    According
to the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, comprised of retired diplomats, military leaders and members of Congress, aid programs in the three countries are working to address the "root causes of violence" in order to "promote opportunity and security for their citizens."

Officials would not say exactly how much money would be affected by the directive with some of it likely already spent.

Between last year and this year, about $1.3 billion was allocated to the region with the vast majority of it going to those three countries, according to a study from the Congressional Research Service.

Load up barges by the thousands and let the Coast Guard ship them back!

Tow the illegal Mexicans to the very southern tip of Mexico and release them there! Far, far away from our border!

“They Haven’t Done a Thing for Us” – President Trump Ends Payments to Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua

    March 30, 2019

    Jim Hoft

According to Gallup five million third world migrants from Latin America to the United States in the next 12 months.

There currently are at least 1.1 million Salvadoran immigrants in the United States.

The number represents about one-fifth (19.1 percent) of the total population of El Salvador (5.7 million in 2007 according to the Salvadoran Department of Statistics and Censuses).

    (Migration Policy map)

A 20,000 strong caravan of illegal migrants is currently organizing for its trek to the United States.

On Friday President Trump told ABC he was cutting financial aid to Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador. Trump told ABC, “They haven’t done a thing for us.”

    It’s about time.

    The Daily Mail reported:

Donald Trump has announced that he is cutting financial assistance to the Northern Triangle countries of El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala.

Trump hinted at the cuts on Friday, as a Mexican minister claimed that the ‘mother of all caravans’ with more than 20,000 people was being organized by Honduras.

ABC reported Trump as saying: ‘I’ve ended payments to Guatemala, to Honduras, and to El Salvador. No money goes there anymore…
…Trump claimed those financial aid programs would end saying: ‘We’re not paying them anymore because they haven’t done a thing for us.’ Most migrants from the three countries come to the U.S.

IMHO, I think this takes a lot more finesse than Trump has; but I hope I'm wrong.

Good, Trump better keep both promises he made today, to cut off aid to these countries AND to shut down our border with Mexico. We need to do whatever it takes to get these countries to keep their people from coming here.

And I honestly don't know why we are giving these countries aid anyway. This needs to be stopped indefinitely. And the democrats are already bitching about this.

That's what Trump says, very strange indeed..... Officials would not say exactly how much money would be affected by the directive with some of it likely already spent.

I would love for them to cut off all foreign aid. However, I also know that doing so will not stop a single illegal or asylum claimant from showing up at our border.

We can't rely on other countries to secure our border, that's our job!
