Open borders is a concept that not only refers to physical borders but also political borders that restrict the free movement of humanity. Liberal progressives assert that there are arguments to made for opening our borders that would benefit not only immigrants but the U.S. as well.

Open Borders: The Case, a blog that discusses arguments for and against the concept of open borders, offers the following "egalitarian" reasons that progressives typically use to make the case for open borders:

Equal opportunity
End of poverty
Removing global apartheid

Michael Lind, the author of "Land of Promise: An Economic History of the United States" and co-founder of the New America Foundation, wrote a piece for Salon in which he outlines possible motivations that liberal progressives might have in supporting open borders.

Lobbing an accusation at progressive thought leaders, Lind said, "Consider the editors of the Nation, in an editorial ... shows the tendency of liberals to view immigration policy through the lens of anti-racism."

Some progressives push back on arguments over natural security that urge tightened border security.

Jim Wallis, a well-known Christian progressive, used the Syrian refugee crisis, to bring a spotlight on America's treatment of immigrants, in an op-ed he wrote for The Huffington Post.

Invoking the Bible's Matthew 25, he appealed to Americans' morality to "welcome the stranger."

Wallis also implied the harsh border restrictions around the world have created a boon for human traffickers.

Some pundits, however, have called upon progressives to rethink their stand on open borders, warning that it's one thing to be kind but another to not exert care over immigration reform that could ultimately bring more problems for the nation.

There are 7 billion people in the world. Most of them would prefer to live in the US. So how many should we let in 1 billion, 2 billion, 3 billion more and more. If the American life boat is overwhelmed the boat will sink and all will drown. Notice liberals never talk about limitations on what is possible and the negative effects of being overwhelmed by an uncontrolled flood of aliens.

As for the motivations of liberals I refer to their favorite cliché: "I am not an American citizen, I am a citizen of the world." They have a dogmatic belief in Marxist ideology that is like a secular religion, a dogma that is impervious to the facts of empirical experience. Utopian ideologues who believe the can make haven on earth.

Ding dong! Has this doofus ever heard the term "Get in. Get out."??

That's the new tactic that opportunists use---i.e move in on an opportunity, exploit it while you can, then move on (get out). We shouldn't be surprised that Third World transferees have this same attitude, since they are actually quite savvy at getting money, even if their infrastructure is backwards. After all, they don't pay for military protection; they let one of the great powers do it for them. They're adjusted to living in their ass-backwards culture, so no one wants to invade it. And then they probably have a significant number of the 100 million unregistered AK-47s on the loose in the Third World and wouldn't mind using one on some starry eyed American.

Right. So they would like to 'get in' to the us, exploit what they can, and then if it turns into a useless s---le they will just go somewhere else. These people are not stupid but they can put on a good front to get sympathy out of you.

Then another new philosophy is "Whatever happens, win!" There is no longer any faithfulness, honor or fidelity left. All we can do is protect ourselves from this exploitation!!

Christian progressive Jim Wallis needs to read EZRA:9 & 10.

It's hard to tell who the traditional Syrians are. Just as with Persia, during the Muslim conquests there were a lot of Muslims from the south that moved northward to conquer. I know the present Iranian population is a mix of traditional Persians and Arabian muslims. Not sure about Syria; it had a very strong Christian tradition for centuries. Probably would be a sort of Iranian, Jewish and Greek mix if history had not changed.
