Obama to propose higher refugee limits for Syrians

WASHINGTON — President Obama will propose raising the limit on refugees allowed into the United States by 5,000 in response to the Syrian refugee crisis, according to a draft proposal sent to congressional committees Wednesday.

But Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said that number does not include a higher number of refugees that could be brought in if the president declares an emergency refugee situation. Grassley, who met

with State Department officials Wednesday, said the administration was "considering opening the floodgates" by using emergency authority.

The refugee ceiling is currently set at 70,000, with Burma, Iraq and Somalia topping the list of 70 countries sending refugees to the United States.

The Refugee Act requires the president to adjust that number annually in consultation with Congress, which happened Wednesday.

A congressional aide, who requested anonymity to reveal private consultations, said Kerry proposed an increase of 5,000. A senior State Department official, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said Kerry proposed a range of

numbers — all increases — which met with varying degrees of approval among members of Congress.

"The President has made it clear that he wants the United States, which has always taken a leadership role with respect to humanitarian issues, and particularly refugees, to be able to do what we can," Secretary of State John Kerry

said Wednesday. "We are committed to increasing the number of refugees that we take, and we are looking hard at the number that we can specifically manage with respect to the crisis in Syria and Europe,"

Refugee relief groups have called on the United States to allow as many as 65,000 Syrian refugees in the United States — a number supported by at least 14 Democratic senators and former Maryland governor Martin O'Malley, a

Democratic presidential candidate. The United Nations High Commission on Refugees has referred more than 18,000 Syrian refugees for admission into the United States since 2013, but the United States has taken less than 1,500 so far.

The 70,000 level has remained steady for the past three fiscal years, and an increase of 5,000 would return it to 2009 levels. The ceiling has been as high as 132,000 during the Bosnian refugee crisis of the early 1990s, but those

numbers declined sharply after the 2001 terrorist attacks brought about more stringent background checks.

What's happening with the Fifth Circuit case? Obama needs to be slapped hard, not only in the Fifth, but elsewhere where his anti-sovereignty agenda has been fluorishing.

There is no emergency. It's all fake. LOOK AT THEIR SHOES. New, clean, no signs of wear and tear from long journeys. This is all fake, staged, a major set-up for stupid leaders in stupid countries. Let US not become one of them.

    NO MORE REFUGEES.

    Period.

U.S. to take in at least 10,000 Syrian refugees

President Obama has decided that the United States should take in at least 10,000 refugees from Syria over the next year, White House officials said Thursday.

Obama has passed the directive on to his administration, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said during his afternoon briefing, adding that the president and Secretary of State John F. Kerry are “in alignment” on the numbers.

The U.S. commitment is for the fiscal year that begins next month, officials said. During the current fiscal year, some 1,600 Syria refugees have come to the United States

That’s less than 10% of the total number of names submitted by the United Nations, but Obama administration officials say the screening process for admitting refugees is difficult and time-consuming.

As millions of refugees flee the violence in Syria and surge into surrounding countries and Europe, refugee organizations have asked the United States to take in 100,000 Syrians -- a dramatic increase

over the 70,000 refugees from all countries admitted in the current fiscal year. Earnest said Thursday that such a large increase would be difficult without a significant increase in funds approved by Congress.
