Yuma CBP apprehends more than 1,500 migrants in 3 days

YUMA, Ariz. – The Customs and Border Protection Yuma Sector apprehended 700 illegal migrants Monday.
In the past three days, CBP officials said more than 1,500 migrants have been apprehended.

In March, Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents started releasing individuals and families on their own recognizance because of the growing number of detainees.

All released individuals and families still have to appear for their immigration hearings.

According to CBP officials, the Yuma Sector processing centers are not designed to house the current number of families and small children they encounter.

In mid-April, Yuma Mayor, Douglas Nicholls, declared a state of emergency to deal with the number of families being released from Border Patrol custody into the city.

Nicholls said he hoped not to get to this point but that organizations helping immigrant families just don’t have capacity to deal with so many.

Last week, Pima County administrators sent a letter to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials asking for help dealing with a rising number of migrants.

In the letter, county officials ask for improved communication around migrant releases, new protocols and for the federal government to recognize the impact releases are having on the community.

“Our local public health agency and our emergency service organizations are left largely in the dark regarding asylum seekers releases to the community. I suggest appropriate protocols be developed so parties are in the communication loop. This seems like a fairly easy problem to solve,” said Pima County Administrator C.H. Huckelberry in the letter.
