Trump might allow current ‘Dreamers’ to stay in immigration program

President Trump is mulling a split decision on the “Dreamers.”


White House sources say the president is moving toward ending new work permits under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, without changing the status of the roughly 800,000 already enrolled in the program.



A decision on the future of the “Dreamers” is expected Tuesday.

Trump has spent the last week trying to decide what to do with the program started by former President Barack Obama in 2012, which allows young immigrants brought to the country as children to work in the US legally, while shielding them from deportation.


Despite Trump’s strident campaign speeches calling DACA an illegal “amnesty,” the fate of the young people already in the program is a key concern, according to several people familiar with his deliberations.




Ending new permits without scrapping the program altogether could be a compromise to buy time for Congress to provide alternative protection for the Dreamers, who registered after being told they would not be deported.


House Speaker Paul Ryan and other legislators are urging the president to hold off scrapping DACA, to give them time to come up with a legislative solution for those now covered by the program.


“These are kids who know no other country, who are brought here by their parents and don’t know another home. And so I really do believe that there needs to be a legislative solution,” Ryan told a Wisconsin radio station.




Trump’s decision comes as a deadline set by 10 Republican state officials critical of DACA approaches. The group told US Attorney General Jeff Sessions in a June letter they would challenge DACA in court by Sept. 5 if the president didn’t end the program.


Late Friday, one of the state attorneys general who had signed the letter to Sessions switched course.


Tennessee Attorney General Herbert Slatery announced his office was dropping its support of the lawsuit and preferred legislation to protect the Dreamers instead.


The “human element” of the program “should not be ignored,” Slatery said.


“Many of the DACA recipients . . . have outstanding accomplishments and laudable ambitions, which if achieved, will be of great benefit and service to our country,” Slatery said. “They have an appreciation for the opportunities afforded them by our country."

This makes one think he may end it and not end it. Sounds double-minded. He may end new amnesties but keep the old amnesties. If that happens will the near 900,000 illegal aliens continue to apply for Advanced Parole so they can merely leave the country for a short time, return and get a green card and then citizenship. And then they can sponsor their families.

DACA is a scam, a sham amnesty.

We just won't know until Tuesday. It's a no win deal for the President no matter what he does. I don't think any of these articles have a clue as to what his decision will be or is if he's already made it.

You are right Judy. We will not know till Tuesday. Guessing games. Ending it in total is the cleanest and doesn't leave the half in, half out ongoing problem. But he may stop new ones and as Kris Kobach mentioned, the President may then phase out the program for those in it currently. Mr. Kobach did say that would be continuing an illegal program but it could be the "compassionate" way to end it fully and then they need to go home.

If Trump does decide to fight the lawsuit, he'll just be concreting his legacy as an amnesty supporter. His previous suggestions of a future comprehension immigration reform and a congressional fix for DACA is very concerning and has already put him in a questionable light on this issue. Deciding to fight for DACA just sort of nails the coffin shut for me. If he does decide to fight it, AG Sessions would be forced into a very tough spot since he has always been adamantly against DACA and has called it unconstitutional and unlawful.

My prediction is Trump will cease to accept application and end renewals but will allow the work permits, etc., to naturally expire. That's is all AG Paxton of Texas is really asking for. Unfortunately though, I do suspect he'll encourage Congress to come up with a quick legislative fix that will continue to protect DACA and set those in the program and those eligible for the program on an eventual path to citizenship. Let's not foget he has in the past vocally encouraged the U.S. Congress to come up with a legislative fix to DACA. Now that the pressure is on, I'm sure there will me some quick movement on that endeavor when the U.S. Congress returns on Tuesday.
