Trump needs to fire these two people now to fix immigration

Trump needs to fire these two people now to fix immigration

Longtime Trump supporters tout the phrase “promises made, promises kept,” and surely President Trump has kept many of his campaign pledges including cutting taxes, appointing conservative judges, and growing the economy. But on his most important issue, immigration, Trump has fulfilled only a few of the commitments he made.

Despite the importance of immigration, Trump has yet to deliver on his promises like building a border wall, enacting mandatory E-Verify, creating a merit-based immigration system, or ending the Diversity Visa Lottery.

While Trump’s legislative agenda has been stalled, the number of border crossings has escalated to the highest level since 2014, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. There are also negative economic consequences on Trump’s working-class base. Even though millions of jobs have been created in the U.S. over the last year, more than 45 percent of new hires were foreign-born workers, reported the Department of Labor Statistics in April.

With the 2018 midterm election looming around the corner, Trump is going to need to re-energize the base that swept him into office in 2016. According to polls conducted by Harvard-Harris and Quinnipiac, immigration remains the most important issue to Republican voters.

Trump must deliver to his base on immigration. In order to do that, he’s going to have to rid his administration of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and White House Director of Legislative Affairs Marc Short. Both have shown that on immigration, they are either completely incompetent or willfully opposing the president’s agenda.

Nielsen, a former Bush Administration official who has led DHS since December 2017, has been an abject failure at her job. In the last two months alone, illegal border crossings have surged to Obama-era levels and don’t show any sign of slowing down. While this is not entirely Nielsen’s fault and there are loopholes in the law, her actions have done little to reverse the tide.

From the very beginning, Nielsen could have pushed the president to declare an immigration emergency, set up tent cities to house aliens who illegally crossed the border, and held adult aliens until the courts adjudicate their claims. Increasing the capacities in tent cities along the border would have fundamentally ended the process known as “Catch and Release” because there would be enough beds to house all adult aliens rather than being released into the interior of the U.S.

In fact, Nielsen made the situation worse on May 9 when she told asylum seekers, “If you are fleeing and you have a need to come to the United States, please come to the ports of entry.” This is an open invitation to illegal immigrants to come to the U.S.

The DHS secretary has come under increased fire from conservatives and was even the subject of the president’s ire during a May 10 cabinet meeting. A week later, she appeared on "The Laura Ingraham Show" and presented herself as a hardliner, taking credit for efforts of real immigration hawks like Attorney General Jeff Sessions and USCIS Director Lee Francis Cissna.

It looks like that’s the best Nielsen can do. Rather than fix the crisis at the border, she has settled for trying to gain favorable press from Trump’s base. Still, positive headlines won’t stop the flow of migrants and refugees trying to cross the border and neither will Nielsen. She must be fired.

Marc Short is another alumnus of the Bush Administration who, according to National Review, worked to stop Trump in the 2016 primary and has a long history of working for a Koch-funded organization.

Short has not been precisely motivated to work with Congress on immigration, and the New York Times reported in late April that Short and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were pushing Trump to work on a new set of tax proposals before the midterm instead of focusing on trade and immigration.

While Trump has demanded Congress work on a merit-based immigration reform, closing loopholes at the border that allow for “Catch and Release,” building a wall and ending the Diversity Visa Lottery, none of those measures have made any momentum in Congress. Politico even reported how Short refuses to play the role of dealmaker on the issue and doesn’t make an effort to bend politicians towards the president’s positions.

What Short has gotten through Congress are areas where Trump and the Koch brothers have an overlapping agenda: tax cuts, regulatory reform, criminal justice reform, and Right to Try. The Koch brothers are also big supporters of granting a clean DACA amnesty, something the president is vehemently opposed to, but nonetheless the plan is making its way through the House.

Yes, it seems more than ironic that the man who made his moneyworking for the Koch brothers-supported Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce isn’t capable of pushing forward Trump’s legislative agenda when it combats theirs. Trump needs a full-time ally, not someone who’s working harder for the Koch brothers than for his legislative agenda.

The Trump base is desperate for a win on immigration. President Trump wants a victory on this issue. However, they’ll both be left waiting as long as Nielsen and Short continue to work for this administration.

Taking credit for the work of others on the border issue to gain favor with Trump is a new low, even for Nielsen.

Marc Short should have been gone long ago and General John Kelly's pick for DHS Secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, should have never been hired by Trump!
