WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials are hoping to break ground on a project replacing 20 miles of border wall in Santa Teresa, New Mexico in early April.

That's according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection Acting Deputy Commissioner Ronald D. Vitiello.

Vitiello briefed reporters Friday on how the administration plans to spend the $1.6 billion Congress authorized for border wall construction this year.

It's much less than the $25 billion Trump wanted. But officials are eager to show they're nonetheless making progress.

Vitiello says the money will provide for about 100 miles of new and replacement wall, including replacing 14 miles of steel landing mat in densely populated San Diego with a bollard-style wall.

Barriers currently blanket 654 miles of the 1,954-mile southern Mexico.

The picture depicted is not a WALL, that is a fence! Hmm, did the Trump administration direct the border patrol to call everything erected from here out a wall even though it's actually a fence? That's just disingenuous!

US President Trump tweets misleading photos of his border wall

DONALD Trump has tweeted images claiming construction on his signature wall has started, but Border Patrol agents said the work has “nothing to do” with the President’s proposed construction.

THE images that US President Donald Trump shared in a tweet about being briefed on the start of his signature wall were actually of cranes replacing a barrier fence along the Mexican border, according to reports.

“Great briefing this afternoon on the start of our Southern Border WALL!” the president tweeted on Wednesday, along with four photos apparently from the scene of a small barrier replacement project in Calexico, California.

According to the New York Post , the images were from a months-long project — plans for which began in 2009 — to replace a 3.6km stretch of barrier along the Mexican border, the LA Times reported, citing a recent statement from US Customs and Border Protection.

Border Patrol agents emphasised that it should not be confused with Trump’s long-promised 3200km wall that he said Mexico would pay for.

“First and foremost, this isn’t Trump’s wall,” Jonathan Pacheco, a spokesman for the Border Patrol’s El Centro Sector, told a group on a border tour in early March, the paper reported.

“This isn’t the infrastructure that Trump is trying to bring in … This new wall replacement has absolutely nothing to do with the prototypes that were shown over in the San Diego area,” he added.

The original fence in Calexico, built in the 1990s, had been constructed from recycled metal scraps and old landing mat, according to the CBP. It is being replaced with a 30-foot-high, bollard-style wall.

“Although the existing wall has proven effective at deterring unlawful cross-border activity, smuggling organisations damaged and breached this outdated version of a border wall several hundred times during the last two years,” the agency said.

Justin Castrejon, a spokesman for the Border Patrol’s El Centro Sector, told the LA Times that “it was ultimately funded under the current administration in 2017, but is completely separate of any political talk or commentary”.
