TAOS, N.M. (Reuters) - The leader of an armed group that is stopping undocumented migrants who cross into the United States from Mexico had boasted about training to assassinate former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, an FBI agent said in court papers on Monday.

Larry Hopkins, leader of the United Constitutional Patriots group, whose camouflage-wearing armed members claim to have helped U.S. officials detain some 5,600 migrants in New Mexico desert in the last 60 days was arrested Friday on a weapons charge.

The FBI in court papers filed on Monday said that while investigating Hopkins' group in 2017 witnesses had accused Hopkins of saying the UCP was planning to assassinate Obama, former Democratic presidential candidate Clinton and financier George Soros.

ALBUQUERQUE, NM (KFOX14) — A federal grand jury in Albuquerque, New Mexico, has returned an indictment charging Larry Mitchell Hopkins, 69, with being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition announced New Mexico U.S. Attorney John C. Anderson and Special Agent in Charge James C. Langenberg of the FBI’s Albuquerque Division.

Hopkins has been in custody since he was arrested by the FBI, with assistance from the Sunland Park Police Department, on April 20, in Sunland Park, New Mexico.

Hopkins, who is a leader of the United Constitutional Patriots, was arrested on 2017 weapons charges following widespread criticism spurred by videos of the group stopping migrants who illegally crossed the border.

The criminal complaint alleges that Hopkins was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition because he previously had been convicted of at least three felony offenses, including possessing a loaded firearm in the state of Michigan in 1996; being a felon in possession of a firearm in the state of Oregon in 2006; and impersonating a peace officer in the state of Oregon in 2006.

He could face 10 years behind bars with three additional years supervised and $250,000 in fines if he's found guilty.
