Trump Tells 'Dreamers' to 'Rest Easy'

The president's comments follow a dispute over a young immigrant's deportation proceedings.

President Donald Trump says immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children, known as “dreamers,” should not be worried about deportation.

They should “rest easy,” the president told The Associated Press in interview comments published Friday.

The remarks come on the heels of the deportation of 23-year-old Juan Manuel Montes Bojorquez, who claims he was deported to Mexico "on or about" Feb. 18 despite being covered under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. The program dates to former President Barack Obama's administration and covers young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children.

The Department of Homeland Security has disputed that claim. In a statement released Wednesday, the agency said Montes Bojorquez had violated his DACA status by voluntarily crossing the border into Mexico and was arrested Feb. 19 after re-entering the U.S. illegally.

Lawyers for Montes Bojorquez have filed a lawsuit seeking to have federal officials turn over information regarding his deportation.

The Trump administration has moved to crack down on illegal immigration by stepping up enforcement and promising to hire thousands of new border agents. But the president has signaled a softer approach, both previously and in his new comments to the AP, when it comes to the some 750,000 immigrants granted DACA protection.

In the new interview, Trump said his administration's policy is not going "after the dreamers," but "after the criminals."

Meanwhile, Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly were in the San Diego area on Friday to observe operations at the border with Mexico.

In a Friday interview with MSNBC, Kelly said Montes Bojorquez's situation was tied to his “irresponsible behavior.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on President Donald Trump (all times local):
3:50 p.m.
President Donald Trump says that if the Justice Department wants to charge WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, "it's OK with me."
Trump says he is not involved in that decision-making process, but would support Attorney General Jeff Sessions if he charged Assange with a crime.
The administration has stepped up its rhetoric against WikiLeaks in recent days, despite the fact that Trump welcomed the group's release of a top Hillary Clinton aide's emails during the election.
Sessions told reporters Thursday that Assange's arrest is a priority as the Justice Department steps up efforts to prosecute people who leak classified information to the media. CIA Director Mike Pompeo last week denounced WikiLeaks as a "hostile intelligence service" and a threat to U.S. national security.

President Donald Trump says businesses and individuals will receive a "massive tax cut" under a tax reform package he plans to unveil next week.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump says the plan will result in tax cuts for both individuals and businesses. He would not provide details of the plan, saying only that the tax cuts will be "bigger I believe than any tax cut ever."
The president says the package will be released on "Wednesday or shortly thereafter" — just before his 100 day mark in office.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin initially set a goal of getting tax reform passed by August, but that deadline has slipped. Mnuchin now says the administration still hoped to get a bill passed well before the end of the year.

President Donald Trump says he believes Thursday's attack in Paris will "probably help" far-right candidate Marine Le Pen in France's upcoming election.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Trump says he is not explicitly endorsing Le Pen. But he says he believes she will be helped by the attack that left a Paris police officer dead, because she's the candidate who is "strongest on borders, and she's the strongest on what's been going on in France."
France's anti-terrorism prosecutor said Friday the gunman had a note with him defending the Islamic State group.
Trump says he believes the attack will impact how the French people vote in Sunday's first round of voting in the presidential election. He says he's not worried about emboldening terrorists by saying an attack can have an impact on a democratic election.

President Donald Trump says that if China wants to solve "the North Korean problem, they will."
Trump has been pressing China both publicly and privately to ramp up pressure on Pyongyang over its nuclear ambitions.
In a tweet Friday morning, Trump said that China is the "economic lifeline" to North Korea. He conceded that "nothing is easy" regarding the tense situation with Pyongyang.
Trump's recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping focused in part on North Korea's nuclear aims.

President Donald Trump says the 100-day benchmark often used to measure a new administration's achievements is a "ridiculous standard."
Trump tweeted Friday, "No matter how much I accomplish during the ridiculous standard of the first 100 days, & it has been a lot (including S.C.), media will kill!"
Trump hits the 100-day mark in office on April 29.
Since taking office, Trump has managed to get a Supreme Court justice confirmed and is pursuing tougher regulations on immigration. But his health care bill didn't come up for a vote in the House, and his travel ban was blocked in the courts.
The 100-day assessment started with President Franklin D. Roosevelt.
Earlier this week, Trump declared that "no administration has accomplished more in the first 90 days."

President Donald Trump says that the latest attack in Paris will have a "big effect" on France's upcoming presidential election.
Trump tweeted early Friday, "Another terrorist attack in Paris. The people of France will not take much more of this. Will have a big effect on presidential election!"
An attacker emerged from a car in Paris Thursday and used an automatic weapon to shoot at officers in the center of the Champs-Elysees. One officer was killed, as was the gunman. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility in a statement.
Candidates in France's presidential election treaded carefully in response to the attack with the first round of voting set for Sunday.
Trump has not expressed an opinion on the upcoming French election, although he was a supporter of the British decision to exit the European Union and has instead stated his preference to one-on-one trade and defense agreements with U.S. allies.

Iran is failing to fulfill the "spirit" of its nuclear deal with world powers, President Donald Trump has declared, setting an ominous tone for his forthcoming decision about whether to pull the U.S. out of the landmark agreement.
As he often had during the president campaign, Trump ripped into the deal struck by Iran, the U.S. and other world powers in 2015 and said "it shouldn't have been signed." Yet he pointedly stopped sort of telegraphing whether or not the U.S. would stay in.
Speaking of the Iranians, Trump said: "They are not living up to the spirit of the agreement, I can tell you that,: although he didn't mention any specific violations. Earlier this week, the administration certified to Congress than Iran was complying — at least technically — with the terms of the deal, clearing the way for Iran to continue enjoying sanctions relief in the near term.

President Trump said Friday that undocumented immigrants who were brought illegally to the U.S. as children should "rest easy" and not fear deportation under his administration's efforts to ramp up immigration enforcement.
The president told The Associated Press in an interview that his calls to crack down on illegal immigration are focused primarily on removing criminals from the U.S. and are not geared toward the so-called Dreamers.
Trump's comments came on the heels of a lawsuit filed Tuesday alleging that a recipient of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which allows undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children to remain in the country, was deported to Mexico.
The Department of Homeland Security said that the individual, 23-year-old Juan Manuel Montes, had originally left the country on his own. Montes said he was forced out.
Trump said that the case is "a little different than the Dreamer case," though he did not specify what he meant by that or how it was different.
On the campaign trail, Trump vowed to take a hard line on illegal immigration, vowing to expand the number of immigration enforcement agents and build a wall between the U.S. and Mexico to stymie the flow of immigrants into the country.

The Associated Press, The Hill, World news and Reports, and many other press sources are claiming that Donald Trump just sent a message to Dreamer illegal aliens in the US and all potential illegal aliens around the world that the DACA Amnesty recipients should "rest easy" and not fear US laws. The report claims Trump said "not after the dreamers, we are after the criminals....that is our policy." which is the same policy Obama violated the US Constitution and our existing laws to put in place!

If these reports are accurate, Donald Trump just proved he was just like Obama on immigration issues and amnesty and he is willing to violate the US Constitution and existing laws like Obama!

Trump himself is even violating federal law because it is illegal for anyone, including lawmakers or the President to...

A person (including a group of persons, business, organization, or local government) commits a federal felony when she or he:

* assists an alien s/he should reasonably know is illegally in the U.S. or who lacks employment authorization, by transporting, sheltering, or assisting him or her to obtain employment, or
* encourages that alien to remain in the U.S. by referring him or her to an employer or by acting as employer or agent for an employer in any way, or
* knowingly assists illegal aliens due to personal convictions.

Penalties upon conviction include criminal fines, imprisonment, and forfeiture of vehicles and real property used to commit the crime. Anyone employing or contracting with an illegal alien without verifying his or her work authorization status is guilty of a misdemeanor. Aliens and employers violating immigration laws are subject to arrest, detention, and seizure of their vehicles or property. In addition, individuals or entities who engage in racketeering enterprises that commit (or conspire to commit) immigration-related felonies are subject to private civil suits for treble damages and injunctive relief.

Since the government continues the picking and choosing which laws they will follow, then maybe they should deport all children that were born to illegal immigrants on American soil and just make up the rules/laws as we choose.

Deport all illegal aliens and all their children, regardless of where they were born. Their children aren't entitled to US citizenship just because a bunch of morons handed out US passports or declared it so. These people were not born under the jurisdiction of the US just because they were born in the US. 14th Amendment states clearly, "subject to the jurisdiction of the United States."

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside. No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any state deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

To claim that the children of illegal aliens, persons who aren't even supposed to be in our country, are citizens of our country ... is one of the grandest political absurdities in world history.

YOUNG IMMIGRANTS

On the legal status of the "dreamers," young immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally and protected from deportation by the Obama administration.

TRUMP: We aren't looking to do anything right now.

AP: That's going to be the policy of your administration, to allow the dreamers to stay?

TRUMP: Yes. That's our policy. I am not saying ... Long-term we are going to have to fix the problem, the whole immigration problem. ... Here is what they can hear: The dreamers should rest easy. OK? I'll give you that. The dreamers should rest easy.

DEPORTING CRIMINALS

On deporting criminals in the country illegally, particularly those affiliated with the brutal Central American street gang MS-13:

TRUMP: It's a little different than the dreamer case, right? But we are putting MS-13 in jail and getting them the hell out of our country. They've taken over towns and cities and we are being really brutal with MS-13 and that's what we should be. They are a bad group and somebody said they are as bad as al-Qaida, which is a hell of a reference. So we are moving criminals out of our country and we are getting them out in record numbers, and those are the people we are after. We are not after the dreamers. We are after the criminals. ...

TRUMP: We are cleaning out cities and towns of hard-line criminals, some of the worst people on Earth, people that rape and kill women, people that are killing people just for the sake of having fun. They are being thrown in jails and they are being all over the country and nobody's ever done it like us, so we are being unbelievably thorough with that. FRANCE AND TERROR ATTACKS

On the impact on France's election of the possible terror attack in Paris: "Well, I think it will have a big effect on who people are going to vote for in the election."

AP: Do you think it's going to help Marine Le Pen?

TRUMP: I think so.

AP: Do you believe that she should be the president?

TRUMP: No, I have no comment on that, but I think that it'll probably help her 'cause she is the strongest on borders and she is the strongest on what's been going on in France.

AP: Do you worry at all that by saying that, that a terrorist attack would have an impact on a democratic election, that it would actually embolden terrorists to try to ...

TRUMP: No. Look, everybody is making predictions who is going to win. I am no different than you. You could say the same thing.

MEETING FOREIGN LEADERS

TRUMP: One of the best chemistries I had was with (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel. ... And I guess somebody shouted out, "Shake her hand, shake her hand," you know. But I never heard it. But I had already shaken her hand four times, you know, because we were together for a long time.

AP: Did you expect you would have good chemistry with her?

TRUMP: No. Because I'm at odds on, you know, the NATO payments and I'm at odds on immigration. We had unbelievable chemistry. And people have given me credit for having great chemistry with all of the leaders, including (Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah) el-Sissi.

TAX REFORM AND HEALTH CARE

TRUMP: I have great relationships with Congress. I think we're doing very well and I think we have a great foundation for future things. We're going to be applying — I shouldn't tell you this, but we're going to be announcing, probably on Wednesday, tax reform. ... We've worked on it long and hard. And you gotta understand, I've only been here now 93 days, 92 days. President Obama took 17 months to do "Obamacare." I've been here 92 days, but I've only been working on the health care, you know, I had to get like a little bit of grounding, right? Health care started after 30 day(s), so I've been working on health care for 60 days. ... we're very close. And it's a great plan ... we have to get it approved.

AP: Is it this deal that's between the Tuesday Group and the Freedom Caucus? Is that the deal you're looking at?

TRUMP: So the Republican Party has various groups, all great people. They're great people. But some are moderate, some are very conservative. The Democrats don't seem to have that nearly as much. You know the Democrats have, they don't have that. The Republicans do have that. And I think it's fine. But you know there's a pretty vast area in there. And I have a great relationship with all of 'em. Now, we have government not closing. I think we'll be in great shape on that, it's going very well. Obviously that takes precedent.

AP: That takes precedent over health care? For next week?

TRUMP: Yeah, sure. Next week. Because the 100 days is just an artificial barrier. The press keeps talking about the 100 days. But we've done a lot. You have a list of things. I don't have to read it.

BORDER WALL AND SPENDING BILL

AP: Obviously that's going to come in a week where you're going to be running up against the deadline for keeping the government open. If you get a bill on your desk that does not include funding for the wall, will you sign it?

TRUMP: I don't know yet. People want the border wall. My base definitely wants the border wall. My base really wants it — you've been to many of the rallies, OK, the thing they want more than anything is the wall. ... They want to see the wall, they want to see security. Now, it just came out that (border apprehensions) they're 73 percent down ... That's a tremendous achievement. ... Look at this, in 100 days, that down to the lowest in 17 years and it's going lower. Now, people aren't coming because they know they're not going to get through and there isn't crime. You know the migration up to the border is horrible for women, you know that? (unintelligible) Now, much of that's stopped because they can't get through.
