President Trump may single-handedly knock down whatever compromise comes out of the Senate’s sprawling immigration debate before protections for “Dreamers” end, according to a report.
The President is prepared to “veto any bill that doesn't advance his common-sense immigration reforms,” a senior administration official told Axios Tuesday night.
Trump’s immigration rhetoric, a focus of his campaign and his presidency, includes the desire for a wall, curbs to legal immigration and an end to the visa lottery system, aimed at allowing immigration from a diverse set of countries.
His proposal unveiled last month also includes protections for “Dreamers,” those immigrants who came to the U.S. illegally as children but are allowed to live and work under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
Brooklyn federal court ruling blocks suspension of DACA
Trump rescinded the Obama administration program last year, and set an arbitrary deadline of March 5 that has spurred one of the issues at the divisve core of the Republican’s presidency to the forefront of Washington’s agenda.
It is unclear if Democrats will give into his demands to limit legal immigration and fund a border wall in exchange for preventing chaos in the lives of the roughly 700,000 currently protected by DACA, which Trump said he could expand to cover 1.2 million immigrants.
The administration official who spoke to Axios said that Democrats would be “walking into a political suicide march” if they fail to get a deal done that Trump approves.
The report in Axios comes as both Republicans and Democrats begin to posture on what a final immigration deal, the subject of open debate in the Senate this week, will be.
President Trump warns Congress of ‘last chance' to fix DACA deal
Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton, a conservative Republican, said that Trump’s plan was the “final offer” after Trump rejected a bipartisan Senate deal brought to him last month, when he reportedly called African countries “s--tholes” and stated his desire for immigration for places such as Norway.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, of New York, has said that he wants to pass a “narrow bill” focused around DACA protections rather than an overhaul of the entire immigration system.
Protections for Dreamers are still in force however, as federal judges in both San Francisco and Brooklyn have granted injunctions to those challenging the suspension on legal grounds.
