Tattoo Removal Business Booming As Fears Of Deportation Mount

    March 18, 2017 10:46 PM

SAN PABLO (KPIX 5) — An East Bay tattoo removal clinic says they’ve treated a record number of clients since the election.

Some in the Latino community worry ICE agents will use their tattoos as an excuse to stop them and check immigration status.

The number of customers has doubled. Typically, people go in to remove an ex-lover’s name or get rid of tattoos for job interviews.

But the fear of deportation is a new reason.

“A lot of people don’t want to be a moving target or even seen as a target,” says Nora Ruiz of the San Pablo Economic Development Corporation. “And for fear that they might be seen as a certain type of person or judged in anyway, people want to get their tattoos removed.”

There’s no evidence suggesting ICE agents are targeting people based on tattoos but people with gang ties or criminal backgrounds are at risk.

It appears some people aren’t taking any chances.

Hurts very bad but it also takes a long time to remove tattoos.

Its like an 8 week treatment but it doesn't get completely removed.

Thank you lorrie for the information. I've always wondered how they can even reverse such a thing, but I knew they did and had been told it really hurt. Back in the day, tattooes were small things mostly on a arm. Now they're all over their bodies, these big giant things with tons of ink. Even on their faces. Such stupidity, I swear. They have that paint you can put on yourself, that washes off or wears off, they should use that stuff instead of the needle and ink.

Stupid in and stupid out. And....where do they get the money in the first place? And I wonder the same thing about these Millenials who are getting covered in tattoos.

I don't understand it, Captainron. It's a primitive fad of some sort, "cool" somehow. I mean look at what Adam Levine has done to himself. It's a crazy fad that I think some will seriously regret. It's a shame really.

Personally, I think tattoos are ugly and would never get one.

They all turn dark green after a while and they are just ugly.

They are idiots you cannot remove finger prints and most of them have already been arrested at one time or another so they will find them.

Immigrants hurry to remove all tattoos fearing ICE may tie them to gangs

Immigrants hurry to remove all tattoos fearing ICE may tie them to gangs

    March 21, 2017

The fear of being deported is spreading to tattoo parlors, which have seen a spike in removal requests since more strict immigration measures have been put in place by the Trump administration.

In San Francisco, a tattoo removal clinic has doubled the number of clients since the election.

“A lot of people don’t want to be a moving target or even seen as a target,” said Nora Ruiz of the San Pablo Economic Development Corporation to KPIX 5. “And for fear that they might be seen as a certain type of person or judged in anyway, people want to get their tattoos removed.”

Tattoos are widely used among gang members from Central America. MS 13, also sometimes just MS or 13, is a symbol of the Mara Salvatrucha gang from El Salvador. Typically these tattoos can be found anywhere on the body, but are most often found in highly visible places like the face, hands or neck.

“La Eme,” or The M, is the symbol of the Mexican Mafia, considered one of the most ruthless prison gangs in the U.S.

Tattoo-related fears were stoked after last month a Mexican immigrant who was protected by President Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was arrested outside his home in Seattle for his alleged gang ties — Daniel Ramirez, who remains in custody, had a tattoo on his forearm.

However, Ramirez's attorneys say the supposed gang tattoo pays homage to the city of La Paz in Mexico's Baja California Sur state where he was born.

In an Op-Ed he wrote for the Washington Post,
Ramirez said Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) knows he is not a gang member because he gave all of his personal information and fingerprints to the government to qualify for DACA.

"Agents said that I was a gang member and that a tattoo on my arm means I'm in a gang,” he wrote. “Agents interrogated me for hours and insisted I was a gang member because I'm from the Central Valley. They are all gang members there, they told me. It didn't seem to matter how many times I told them that I wasn't
