An Annapolis man was arrested in North Carolina by U.S. Marshals and will be charged with first-degree murder as police say he assisted in the gang killing of a 21-year-old woman.

Anne Arundel police said Milton Alejandro Portillo-Rodriguez, 22, of Bricin Court, was arrested in Avery County, North Carolina on Nov. 4 on charges he helped kill Jenni Rivera-Lopez of Annapolis earlier this year.

Portillo-Rodriguez was listed in a grand jury indictment filed Oct. 27, where five others who were charged with Rivera-Lopez’s killing were linked to Portillo-Rodriguez in a conspiracy charge.

While Portillo-Rodriguez was listed in the indictment, he was not charged by the grand jury.

The other five charged — Ervin Arrue-Figuero, Francisco Ramirez-Pena, Ronald Adonay Mendez-Sosa, Darvin Guerra Zacarias and Brenda Yaneth Argueta — are all believed to be members of the gang Mara Salvatrucha, a transnational gang better known as MS-13.

Police wrote in charging documents the five led Rivera-Lopez out to a remote area June 24 and beat her to death. Investigators found her body Sept. 20 in a grave on the outskirts of Crownsville.

All five are also being sought by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for possible deportation as four are accused of emigrating into the country illegally from El Salvador and the fifth suspect from Mexico.

While Portillo-Rodriguez is alleged to have helped kill Rivera-Lopez and the other five have been charged with carrying out the murder in accordance with MS-13, it is unclear whether law enforcement believe the man is also a part of the gang.

Police spokesman Marc Limansky declined to comment on whether they believe Portillo-Rodriguez is also a member.

He also did not know when Portillo-Rodriguez would be extradited to this county.

Gang-related homicides and attacks have become a focus for law enforcement, as several incidents have been tied to MS-13.

Arrue-Figuero is facing additional gang- and assault-related charges along with two others in connection with the beating of a student outside of Annapolis High School this year.

Police said the student was attacked by a group of people after he refused to join the gang.

A Severn man, Jose Augustin Salmeron-Larios, faces federal racketeering charges as prosecutors say he helped lead the Maryland-based branches of the gang and is linked to two murders in Prince George’s County.

Police say two other young Hispanic Annapolis-area residents have been found dead after they were reported missing.

Neris Giovani Bonilla-Palacios, 17, was found dead off Open View Lane in October as police say he was killed in a gang-related attack sometime around when he was reported missing Aug. 5.

Jose Hernandez-Portillo, 22, was found also killed in a gang-related attack, police said. His body was found at Quiet Waters Park in August, but he was not immediately identified. He was reported missing almost a year ago before his body was discovered.
