Politico: Democrats Complain DHS John Kelly Is Not Following Their Commands

    by NEIL MUNRO
    12 Jun 2017

Democratic Senators think homeland security chief John Kelly is not doing enough to implement their Democratic priorities, according to a litany of partisan complaints showcased by Politico.

The Democratic priorities for Kelly include him ending the enforcement of immigration laws which keep Americans’ wages from disappearing in a flood of cheap labor and cheap drugs, him publicly backstabbing other leaders in President Donald Trump’s cabinet, and him sabotaging Trump’s election-winning promise to build a border wall.

“I would like to think he would be a moderating force … He has an understanding of why people want to come to this country, so I would think, hopefully, that would be part of his thinking,” a disappointed Nevada Democratic Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto grumbled to Politico.

“Look, we’ve had some arguments, the secretary and I,” Democratic Sen. Bob Casey told Politico. “I want to try to do whatever I can to work with him, but I think we probably have some basic differences.”

Instead of complying with the Democrats’ priorities, Kelly is building Trump’s border wall, and is complying with Trump’s “Hire American” priorities by declining to increase the annual inflow of roughly one million contract workers into the United States. “I know we already have large numbers [of contract workers] that come in and have been coming in over the years, but … in the current administration, this is all about American jobs versus people that come in and do the work,” Kelly told Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp at a June 6 hearing.

Kelly and Trump have made a few compromises with Democrats — but they have been gotten nothing in exchange except more Democratic hostility and growing worries among their blue-collar supporters.

For example, Trump has reversed a campaign promise to shutter the ‘Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals” quasi-amnesty that now allows roughly 765,000 illegals to work in the United States. “We are not, not, not targeting DACA registrants right now,” Kelly said June 7 at a hearing called by the House Committee on Homeland Security.

But neither Trump nor Kelly have got anything from the Democrats in exchange for this gift — no cash for the border wall, no promise to curb sanctuary cities, no commitment to reduce companies’ use of foreign contract workers, and no curbs on company hiring of illegals.

Kelly does show his impatience with grandstanding by the legislators who try to make him do the unpopular things that they dare not do — such as importing more contract workers or turning a blind eye to more illegal immigration. One June 7, for example, at a hearing of the House Committee on Homeland Security, he told one legislator who complained about DACA program that:

"My [response] back to them is ‘If you feel so strongly about it, you clearly do, why don’t you do something about it? Why don’t you work with your colleagues, both sides of the aisle, because there is a lot of support for this and change the law and I’ll follow the law.’"

According to Politico’s account of the Democratic complaints:

Today, it’s tough to find anyone on the left willing to defend Kelly. He has alienated potential allies on Capitol Hill, including Democrats who voted to confirm him, and is endangering his reputation as a nonpartisan figure in a presidential administration that has relatively few.

“I think Secretary Kelly has drank the Kool-Aid,” said Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, who was among the Democrats who voted to confirm Kelly in January. “He’s not the person who I thought I was voting for.”

… The secretary has said that if Democrats don’t like his enforcement of immigration laws, they should “change those laws” or “shut up.” That bluntness has further infuriated Democrats, who note they have been trying for years to reform immigration laws but have been stymied by Republicans
    .

Kelly owes his job to the fact that Trump ran against the Democrats’ very unpopular open-border “reform” of immigration laws that would have transferred even more money away from Americans’ pay packets over to Wall Street, according to Congress’ own budget office. He now looks secure in his job, but Senator Menendez is facing a criminal case that may end his tenure in the Senate this winter, long before Kelly packs his retirement bags.

So Kelly does his job amid growing Democratic complaints. “I have my marching orders from the president,” he told the House Committee on Homeland Security on June 7.

You can't negotiate with Democratic Leadership. Shut it down. You end DACA now. It's June, time to "expire" DACA in full, immediately. JUST DO IT. It isn't a bargaining chip, it's a problem that needs to be solved. Tell the Democrats to take a hike, you don't need them for this, you don't want them for this, you tell them DACA is unconstitutional and it is over. Period.

DACA's deserve no sympathy at all. They are MS-13, they are drug runners, they are drunk drivers, they steal seats in college and jobs from Americans. END DACA and get them out of here on the earliest possible date.

The US citizens did not vote democrats to run the country for a reason. Now they are delusional thinking they still have control. The rest of these democrats need to be voted out especially the older ones who have become senile and so set in their ways.

Just another example of why not keeping his (Trump's) promise to end DACA was a serious mistake. Not only did he not get anything for it, he has also disappointed a large segment of his base. Trump's failure to end DACA immediately, as promised, has lost him some of the trust many of us put into him on election day! Breaking a strong campaign promise so easily has left some of us wondering what promises will he break in the future.

For the life of me I cannot understand why the Trump administration is still accepting (and approving) applications for DACA! Not keeping his promise to end the program was bad, but to continue expanding the program with new members is just ludicrous!

Keep your promise, Mr. President, end DACA now!

It is ludicrous unless he does what Spicer said he was going to do which is let it "expire" in June. So, it's June, it's time to "expire" it, to do whatever needs to be done to "expire" it, which means end it once and for all.

Ninth Circuit just announced ruling on the revised travel ban and it's still on hold but they're going to let the administration proceed with "new vetting procedures". The opposition wails it's been more than 90 days so the administration should already have "extreme vetting procedures", no, they couldn't do that, new vetting procedures were blocked by the court ruling, the same with the reduction in refugees. I don't think Ann Corcoran understands that. So much bad information rolling around. Very frustrating.

But ending DACA is simple. Yes, there will be huge back-lash, there will be protests and riots, and thousands of lawsuits. But just bring it on and get it over with.

I've heard nothing in regards to the program expiring except the one passing sentence Spicer made a month or two ago. Honestly, I think he was uninformed, mispoke, or was just attempting to temporarily take the heat of the White House on DACA. I've not heard or seen anything else on a June expiration anywhere else. If the program was set to expire this month, I'm 99.9% sure we would have heard something more about it by now.

If you have more information on this June expiration date, I'm sure we would all love to see it.

I posted tons of information on it and am not going through that again. If they let it expire, then they'll shut it down on June 15th. We'll see what they do. If they do, the less said the better. This DACA 2012 is within the authority of John Kelly as Secretary of DHS to end since it was Janet Napolitano who directed it by MEMO to begin with. Just disable the system. Easy Peasy to end it, just disable the website and let the work permits expire on their due dates. That should seriously reduce the lawsuits. No announcement is required, no big Presidential EO Signing, no big production. Just call IT in DHS and disable the website. If press asks, just tell them, Obama's 3 year renewal expired on June 15th and the President is not interested in renewing or extending it.

It should have ended day one. It was expected. The President continuing to give amnesty, legalization and a path to citizenship too, has given strength to those who want the big amnesty (Republicans and Democrats). How can he say it is fine to allow the "dreamers" cleared under DACA presently and leave the others that could qualify on the outside. The proposed plan is to include the family members, to not separate families.

Even if this administration ends new applicants, we still have millions of illegal aliens who could remain when you add up family members.

Please keep your word President Trump. End DACA.

Well, I must have missed that so-called "ton" of information. Like I said, I heard Spicer say something about it a month or so ago in passing. Other than that, I've seen nothing else on a expiration date coming from the White House. I'm afraid anyone that believes DACA is going to end on June 15th is going to be extremely disappointed.

Trump has pretty much said he's going to take care of the DACA folks. His ultimate goal, in my opinion, is to offer them a permanent path to legalization and citizenship. All he's waiting for is a bill from the U.S. Congress. It's time to face the facts, President Trump is going to screw us on DACA (actually he already has). The signals coming from Trump and the White House on this have been pretty clear.

Maybe he will take care of them, I sure hope not though. They all need to be on the run, in the shadows, packing their bags, and on the list for deportation.
