Two slaying suspects arrested at border crossing

SAN YSIDRO — Two men suspected in the slaying of a 73-year-old Alpine woman were arrested yesterday evening as they entered the United States from Mexico at the San Ysidro border crossing, sheriff's officials said.

The woman's grandson, Brandon Allen Hayes, 26, was detained at the border a few hours after Jeffrey Carl Reed was arrested, sheriff's Lt. Dennis Brugos said.

The two were sought for questioning after Eunice Cothron was found dead May 16 in her residence at Alpine Mobile Home Estates on Alpine Boulevard.

The cause of her death has not been released. Brugos said the motive for the killing may have been robbery.

Investigators said Hayes and Reed were believed to have been in the area of Cothron's home before her body was discovered.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents contacted Reed early in the evening as he entered the country at the port of entry, Brugos said.

Agents notified sheriff's homicide investigators, who booked Reed on suspicion of murder. Hayes was detained by agents a few hours later and also handed over to sheriff's investigators, then booked on suspicion of murder, Brugos said.
