EL PASO — An El Paso man and two Mexican nationals have been arrested on charges of conspiring to smuggle firearms into Mexico, federal law-enforcement officials said.

Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested John Avelar, 32, a U.S. citizen, at his El Paso home. Jonatan Lopez-Gutierrez, 32, and Jose Amador-Villalpando, 50, both of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, were arrested at the Stanton Street Bridge before they were able to enter Mexico.

The arrests were made on Wednesday and Thursday.

Federal agents said they found several assault-type firearms concealed in roofing materials in the back of the van Lopez-Gutierrez was driving.

The arrests were the culmination of an eight-month investigation resulting in the seizure of 24 weapons, including a semiautomatic 50-caliber firearm, semiautomatic assault rifles, a 12-guage shotgun, and 308-caliber sniper rifles.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Richard Mesa ordered all three held without bail Friday during an initial appearance in federal court.
