86 people detained, $1 million in marijuana seized in busy 24 hours for border patrol

RIO GRANDE VALLEY -Border Patrol agents in the Rio Grande Valley had a busy 24 hours early this week.

At 1:30 a.m. Monday, Rio Grande City Border Patrol agents seized more than $1 million worth or marijuana near Los Arrieros.


Officials with U.S. Customs and Border Protection say agents tried to pull over a speeding SUV when, in an attempt to evade apprehension, the driver veered off the roadway and struck a utility pole.


The driver took off on foot and left behind 75 bundles of marijuana weighing 1,351 pounds. The marijuana was turned over to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).


Monday afternoon, Kingsville Station agents were called to a local ranch where the manager said he discovered human remains. The Kenedy County Sheriff's Office and the Justice of the Peace arrived on scene and declared the person deceased at 3 p.m. Authorities say there was a Honduran ID found near the person.


On Monday evening, agents at the Weslaco Station took 86 people who were in the country illegally into custody.


Agents say they saw the large group of people walking toward them on a trail.

All subjects were apprehended without incident and admitted to being in the country illegally, according to authorities.
