CORPUS CHRISTI — Eight undocumented immigrants were taken into custody about 10:30 a.m. Saturday after they tried to flee a routine traffic stop, said John Lopez, spokesman for U.S. Border Patrol, South Texas Region.

A Nueces County constable attempted to stop a vehicle at county roads 70 and 73. The constable and Nueces County’s sheriff’s deputies chased the vehicle and contacted border patrol.

The driver, of Mexico, was taken to Nueces County Jail, Lopez said. He was held Saturday on an immigration detainer. He has charges pending for evading arrest with a vehicle and unlawful transportation of people, jail officials said.

The other five men and two women were taken to the U.S. Border Patrol Corpus Christi station and will be returned to their country of origin. Two men were citizens of Mexico; three men and one woman were from El Salvador; and one woman was from Guatemala, Lopez said.
