i read one story the other day where an agent smuggled in 15 people and was only given 15 MONTHS

Border agent indicted in smuggling case

LAREDO, Texas — A border agent has been indicted on charges of conspiracy, bribery and smuggling of illegal immigrants.

Jose Ramiro Arredondo, a Customs and Border Protection agent who was arrested last month, was indicted in U.S. District Court on Tuesday. He faces three counts of smuggling undocumented immigrants and charges of bribery and conspiracy.

An accused smuggler told authorities he paid Arredondo to help him and three illegal immigrant bypass inspection booths at the Bridge of the Americas on Jan. 9. An agriculture inspector stopped the group before they could leave the building.

Surveillance video later showed Arredondo escorting the smuggler and others around the inspection booths on two other occasions, authorities said.

If convicted, Arredondo could face up to 50 years in prison.

Former customs officer sentenced

A former Laredo District Customs and Border Protection officer will spend almost four and a half years behind bars for helping smuggle illegal aliens into the country.

Thirty-three-year-old Jose Ramiro Arredondo received the sentence after earlier admitting in federal court to escorting an alien smuggler and undocumented workers through the Laredo checkpoint on various occasions while on duty.

Arredondo was accused of assisting in the illegal operation from late 2005 until his arrest in January of this year. Arredondo - who reportedly was paid for his services - was also fined five thousand dollars.

Very good for someone who does not live on the border, big problem
in hiring agents who have lived along the border years and have friends,
relatives on both sides it is an recipe for disaster.
