TX - Border Patrol agent shoots suspect after being 'assaulted,' says CBP

A U.S. Border Patrol agent based in South Texas was involved in a shooting near the Rio Grande on Sunday morning after he was assaulted, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

The federal agent had been attempting to arrest a person near the U.S.-Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas, shortly before 10 a.m. local time when the individual "assaulted" the agent, the Department of Homeland Security agency said in a statement Sunday. It's not clear how the person hurt the agent or what injuries he sustained.

In response, the agent fired his gun. The alleged assailant was taken approximately 100 miles northeast to a hospital in San Antonio, Texas, for medical treatment. CBP did not specify whether the person was a woman or man, nor their immigration status or medical condition.

The agent is stationed in the Del Rio sector, one of nine Border Patrol hubs on the Southwest border, and specifically assigned to the Eagle Pass Station, one of 10 in Del Rio.

The FBI, the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General, and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility will investigate the incident.

In late July, an agent from the San Diego region shot and injured a male suspect after several agents were attacked while driving all-terrain vehicles in a remote region near Imperial Beach, CBP said in a statement.

In May, a Border Patrol agent based in Laredo fatally shot an illegal immigrant in Rio Bravo, Texas, after coming "under attack by multiple subjects using blunt objects," CBP said.

In fiscal 2017, the nearly 20,000 agents used firearms 17 times — down from 55 times in 2012.

There were nine firearm-related incidents in the first six months of fiscal 2018, from Oct. 1, 2017, through March 31.

Eagle Pass Border Patrol Agent Involved in Shooting

    Release Date:
    September 3, 2018

“On Sept. 2, at approximately 9:55 a.m., a U.S. Border Patrol agent assigned to the Eagle Pass, Texas, Station, attempted to arrest a subject near the Rio Grande River. The subject, a 48-year-old Honduran man, assaulted the agent, who shot the subject with his service-issued weapon. The subject was transported to a San Antonio Hospital, for treatment of a gunshot wound to the arm, and was released later that afternoon. Following his release from the hospital, the subject was transported to Eagle Pass South Border Patrol Station for processing according to CBP guidelines. The Honduran Consulate was notified. The agent involved in the incident was unharmed and, by standard policy is currently on administrative leave. The FBI, the DHS Office of Inspector General and CBP’s Office of Professional Responsibility all responded to investigate.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control and protection of our nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
