SANTA TERESA -- Border Patrol agents seized 1,435 pounds of marijuana Tuesday during a smuggling attempt near Santa Teresa, according to a news release.
The marijuana had an estimated value of $1.1 million.

After observing a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup headed north on the Pete Domenici Highway, agents attempted to stop it, but the driver immediately made a U-turn and went back toward Mexico, the release stated.

The driver led agents back to the immediate border area where additional agents successfully deployed spike strips. On deflated tires, the driver attempted to travel east over the northbound lanes of the Pete Domenici Highway but became stuck after traveling about 20 feet into the desert.

Ernesto Rojo-Lopez, a 19-year old undocumented resident from Mexico, was apprehended in the vehicle, according to the release.

The narcotics, driver and vehicle were turned over to the Drug Enforcement Administration for further investigation.

To date for fiscal year 2008 (Oct. 1 through Oct. 31, 2007), Border Patrol agents from the El Paso Sector have seized more than $8.5 million in illegal drugs.

Why are they calling him "...resident from Mexico..." when in fact he is a Mexican national drug dealer? Those agents are lucky he didn't make it back to Mexico with injuries, or they would surely be in jail right now, while the drug dealer and his family would be allowed to come to the US and be taken care of with our tax dollars until the trial and beyond. It boggles the mind that when an illegal is shot he/she gets settlement money and residency, and border agent gets jail, yet when a 15 yr old American boy is beaten to death at a boot camp, nobody is held responsible.
