Carmona: Sheriffs key to solving border woes
September 29th, 2008 @ 1:21pm

Former Surgeon General Dr. Richard Carmona says the nation's southwestern border sheriffs offer a wealth of information for how to deal with the nation's border challenges.

Carmona, who has been a Pima County deputy sheriff for more than 20 years, says border sheriffs face unique challenges over immigration, drug and national security threats.

He says the 24 border counties from Texas to California don't get the funding they need while getting far more attention than they need - usually negative, concerning some border challenge.

Carmona, speaking at the start of the Southwestern Border Sheriff's Coalition meeting Monday in Tucson, says sheriffs at the border can offer reasonable ways to help solve the border crisis.
