97 House Members To Pelosi: No Amnesty In Immigration Overhaul

    Apr 4, 2007
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(The Politico) Ninety-seven House members sent Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) a letter Wednesday asking her “not to bring amnesty legislation to the floor” as Congress resumes its controversial effort to move an immigration overhaul.

Signers broadly define “amnesty” as anything that puts undocumented workers on a path to citizenship.

Rep. Nancy Boyda of Kansas is the lone Democrat to sign the letter distributed by Republican Reps. Brian Bilbray of California and Lamar Smith of Texas on Wednesday.

“The United States has the most generous legal immigration system in the world,” the letter concludes. “We should take the side of American workers and taxpayers, legal immigrants and the rule of law. Please oppose any effort to put illegal immigration on the path to amnesty.”

Where are the signatures from the freshman Democrats that ran a "get tough" campaign on border security and illegal immigration? I'm getting sick and tired of these phony politicians that say one thing to get elected and then go in the opposite direction once elected.

    Go figure.

Boy, I sure am glad that we taught President Bush a lesson but replacing all those anti- illegal immigrant Republicans with Democrats last November.

Those of you responsible know who you are...

I wouldn't expect anything else from our newbie dem's. While this should be a non-partisan issue its quite obvious it will be voted along party lines.

Anybody have a list of newbie dem's that ran on a border security and enforcement? Would be nice to know who flopped so quickly.

Rep. Heath Shuler (D-NC) is definitely one of those folks!

Hit that nail on the head...He used the cover up term of "comprehensive immigration reform", but check the last line in bold. This is quoted from his 06 campaign site, a definate flopper:

I believe that to correctly address illegal immigration we must revamp our current system. True immigration reform must be more than just protecting the borders. America needs comprehensive immigration reform that secures our borders, eliminates the backlog of CIS, and stops illegal immigration. We must increase the resources and funding available to the Border Patrol so more agents can be hired and more patrols conducted to keep people from illegally entering our country. We must also hold companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants responsible for their actions. By offering employment to those who have illegally entered the country, these companies are only encouraging more illegal immigration. While I understand the reasons that prompt some to illegally enter the United States and that America is a nation built by immigrants, I do not support granting amnesty to people who have broken the law.
