The Cameron County Sheriff’s Department has received a more than $2.2 million grant for Operation Border Eagle, which will target narcotics smuggling, arms trafficking and other illegal activity along the Southern border.
The $2,251,942 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice will fund the hiring of 12 sheriff’s deputies and outfit them with equipment, uniforms and vehicles.
Sheriff Omar Lucio said his office already has a list of about eight candidates and will start conducting background investigations on them. He hopes to have the 12 deputies hired by Sept. 15.
