El Paso immigration office detects marriage fraud

EL PASO, Texas -- Two people are awaiting sentences on marriage fraud charges after the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services office in El Paso suspected the alleged fraud in March.

Officials with the Department of Homeland Security said Antonio Rosales, a U.S. citizen, and his wife Ederminda Ortiz-de Rosales, a Mexican native, arrived at the USCIS office on March 17 for an interview. At that time an officer suspected that the couple was attempting to commit marriage fraud.

Rosales later admitted in an interview with the Office of Fraud Detection and National Security that the marriage was entered into only to help Ortiz-de Rosales obtain a green card, DHS officials said.

The couple was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.

Rosales pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the federal government on May 28, and a jury found Ortiz-de Rosales guilty of fraud charges on June 15.

Both are being held in the county jail awaiting sentencing, officials said.
