TX: Group Rallies outside Border Patrol headquarters

Group Rallies outside Border Patrol headquarters
    Reported by: Jordan Williams

    Last Update: 6/01 6:38 pm

EDINBURG - People rallied outside the Border Patrol headquarters asking them to close border checkpoints during hurricane evacuations.

Today marked the start of hurricane season. Members of the South Texas Civil Rights Project says some people won't evacuate, because they'll be too afraid of getting caught at a checkpoint.

The group wants the Obama administration to come up with a clear policy.

Attorney Corinna Scheurich heads the group and organized the rally. She tells us, "We think that they need to say that they're going to stop immigration enforcement during hurricane evacuations."

Members of LUPE, another community organization, joined the call for change.

Martha Sanchez says she wants to help people who may need to evacuate.

"We cannot help them if we don't know exactly what's going to happen," she explains. "What's going to happen at checkpoints? And what's going to happen when they're boarding buses?"

"I think people won't leave...even if they are citizens," says Scheurich. "They won't leave, because they'll think there's no way my car will make it through the Falfurrias checkpoint."

The group recently delivered a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. They hope the president changes policy before another hurricane hits the Valley.

NEWSCHANNEL 5 called the Border Patrol Public Affairs Office in Washington. A spokesperson tells us, "In an emergency situation, safety is still our number one priority. There's no 'yes' or 'no' answer. There are a lot of things that go into whether a checkpoint will be temporarily closed. Weather and traffic are both factors. We will cooperate with local and state authorities, and we will not impede a safe and speedy evacuation."

Illegals need to get the message they are not welcome in US!

And after Hurricane season is over, they will ask that immigration not be enforced on the 4th of July, Labor Day, Old Saints Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Christmas Eve, the Sabbath and eventually their Birthdays.......
