BROWNSVILLE — A Brownsville man living along the Rio Grande border for more than 60 years insists the border is not secure.

Rusty Monsees claims he had to scare off a group of people crossing the border illegally in the middle of the day on Wednesday. He said they were trying to take his truck.

Monsees said he was inside the truck when it all happened
. He said the group of four came around the border fence, possibly looking for a quick getaway ride.

The property owner fired a single warning shot at his palm tree to scare off the group.

“Four came around the corner of the fence,” Monsees said. “One of them, he was in the lead, came up to my truck. Here we are sitting, and (he) started to open my door.”

Monsees said two men were wearing dark colors. One of them wore a Batman shirt and was talking on a cell phone in Spanish. The two other people in the group were women.

Monsees was able to get a good look at the group, because it all happened around 3:30 p.m. He said their boldness worries him.

"The aggressiveness and the fact that they are willing to come to me,” Monsees said. “I’m supposed to be the bad boy in the neighborhood? Maybe I am. But, this much is true, if they will approach me like this in the daytime, what chances a woman have or an older man who is not able to defend himself?”

The one warning shot was enough to send the group of people running. Monsees said the border along Cameron County is not secure, and those who cross the border illegally will continue taking their chances to get to the final destinations.
"They have nothing to fear. Once they're taken in, they are not charged,” Monsees said.

Monsees wants increased DPS patrols along the Rio Grande in Cameron County, like there is in Hidalgo and Starr counties.
Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said units were dispatched to Monsees’s home to take a report. He said Border Patrol agents were already on the scene and looking for the group. No one was found.

Monsees wasn’t injured, but he said he’s keeping his shotgun in his truck to protect himself.
