MISSION -- An illegal immigrant who escaped from a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle led authorities on a short chase this afternoon in south Mission.

A Border Patrol agent arrested the man shortly after he crossed the Rio Grande at Anzalduas County Park. As the agent drove the man to the McAllen Border Patrol station, the man struggled to break a back window of the vehicle.

The agent pulled over near the intersection of W. Military Highway and S. Shary Road to secure the illegal immigrant about 2:30 p.m. As she stopped the car, the man successfully broke and climbed out the back window, fleeing into the nearby Sharyland Business Park.
He was not handcuffed, said Border Patrol Spokesman, Daniel Doty.

"We don't handcuff (illegal immigrants) unless we see a need," Doty said.

Several agents, McAllen Police, a helicopter and a dog searched the industrial parks and nearby fields. The man was found hiding in a trailer of a rig at a nearby business.

The man is expected to be arraigned on charges related to fleeing authorities tomorrow, Doty said.
