Illegal immigration activist lands county job; Erwin quits

SAN BERNARDINO--An anti-illegal immigration activist has been hired by County Supervisor Neil Derry as a special project coordinator.

Joseph Turner had proposed a San Bernardino ballot measure prohibiting landlords from renting to undocumented immigrants and that city business be conducted only in English.

County School Board member Gil Navarro warned the supervisors that “Turner wants to tear this community apart.â€

This is a very unfair article. It is not news that Joe Turner has a new job working with a county.

They are trying to chase Joe around and hound him to death because he has spoken out against illegal immigration.

This article is a form of harassment.

The only minority member of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors on Thursday criticized a colleague's hiring of an anti-illegal immigration activist earlier this week.

Supervisor Josie Gonzales said Supervisor Neil Derry's decision to hire Joseph Turner, founder of Save Our State, as a special projects coordinator could be taken as an offense by the Latino and black residents.

"I do not agree that Supervisor Derry has made the wisest of choices if, in fact, he is committed to serving and representing his constituency within the 3rd District," she said.

The district, like the rest of the county, has a large Latino population, she said.

Gonzales said she finds some of Turner's statements offensive.

"His comments have been racist, but I don't know the man," she said. "I have an outside-looking-in perspective."

Turner has accused illegal immigrants of turning California into "a Third World cesspool."

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a civil rights firm in Montgomery, Ala., has listed Save Our State as a hate group and reported that rallies organized by Turner have attracted white supremacists.

Turner has not responded to requests for an interview.

In the past, he has said that he cannot control who attends his rallies.

Derry, who could not be reached to comment Thursday, said earlier this week that Turner has been criticized because of his opposition to illegal immigration.

Derry said he didn't believe Turner was racist.

Gonzales missed Tuesday's meeting because she was attending her son's wedding, but she said she would not have voted against the contract.

She said it is Derry's prerogative to make his own staff choices.

She added that she hopes he changes his mind.

Yeah, your a fine american to be critisizing someone you dont know

This reporter, this newspaper, and these illegal alien supporting politicians are trying to persecute Joe Turner and send the clear message that anyone that speaks out against illegal immigration will have their employment scrutinized and attacked.
