Breaking: Democrats Say They Have Deal with Trump on Young Immigrants

Democrats say they have deal with Trump on young immigrants

By ERICA WERNER and JILL COLVIN

WASHINGTON (AP) — The top House and Senate Democrats said Wednesday they had reached agreement with President Donald Trump to protect thousands of younger immigrants from deportation and fund some border security enhancements — not including Trump’s long-sought border wall.

The deal announced by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi following a White House dinner would enshrine protections for the nearly 800,000 immigrants brought illegally to this country as kids who had benefited from former President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. The program provided temporary work permits and protection from deportation.

Trump ended the program earlier this month and had given Congress six months to come up with a legislative fix before the statuses of the so-called “Dreamers” begin to expire.

“We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides,” Pelosi and Schumer said in a joint statement.

It was the second time in two weeks that Trump cut out Republicans to reach a deal with Pelosi and Schumer. A person briefed on the meeting, who demanded anonymity to discuss it, said the deal specifies bipartisan legislation called the DREAM Act that provides eventual citizenship for the young immigrants.

Speaker Paul Ryan says in AP interview that deporting people brought to US illegally as children not in America’s interest. (Sept. 13)

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but said in its own statement that the president had had “a constructive working dinner” with Schumer, Pelosi and administration officials “to discuss policy and legislative priorities,” including DACA.

“This is a positive step toward the President’s strong commitment to bipartisan solutions for the issues most important to all Americans,” the White House said.

During a White House meeting with moderate House members from both parties earlier Wednesday, Trump had urged lawmakers to come up with a bipartisan solution.

“We don’t want to forget DACA,” Trump told the members at the meeting. “We want to see if we can do something in a bipartisan fashion so that we can solve the DACA problem and other immigration problems.”

The apparent deal is the latest example of Trump’s sudden pivot to bipartisanship after months of railing against Democrats as “obstructionist.” He has urged them to join him in overhauling the nation’s tax code, among other priorities.

Trump, who was deeply disappointed by Republicans’ failure to pass a health care overhaul, infuriated many in his party when he reached a three-month deal with Schumer and Pelosi to raise the debt ceiling, keep the government running and speed relief to states affected by recent hurricanes.

“More and more we’re trying to work things out together,” Trump explained Wednesday, calling the development a “positive thing” for both parties.

“If you look at some of the greatest legislation ever passed, it was done on a bipartisan manner. And so that’s what we’re going to give a shot,” he said.

The “Kumbaya” moment now appears to extend to the thorny issue of immigration, which has been vexing lawmakers for years. Funding for Trump’s promised wall had been thought to be a major point of contention between Republicans and Democrats as they attempted to forge a deal.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said earlier Wednesday that Trump was “committed to the wall. It doesn’t have to be tied to DACA but its important and he will get it done.”

House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also sat down with Pelosi to talk immigration Wednesday, said during an AP Newsmaker interview that deporting the so-called “Dreamers” was “not in our nation’s interest,” and said the president had “made the right call.”

“I wanted him to give us time. I didn’t want this to be rescinded on Day One and create chaos,” Ryan said, arguing the time would allow Congress to “come up with the right kind of consensus and compromise to fix this problem.”

Schumer, Pelosi say DACA deal will exclude wall after dinner with Trump

    by W. James Antle lll
    Sep 13, 2017, 9:56 PM

White House hailed a "constructive working dinner" Wednesday night between President Trump and top Democratic congressional leaders, who claimed afterward they agreed to exclude the border wall from a deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

and administration officials met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., the latest in a series of overtures from the president to the other side of the aisle.

A White House official told reporters afterward the "topics included tax reform, border security, DACA, infrastructure and trade." But Pelosi and Schumer focused on DACA, former President Barack Obama's executive action shielding from deportation illegal immigrants who came to the United States before age 16, which was recently rescinded by the Trump administration.

"We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President," Schumer and Pelosi said in a joint statement. "The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that's acceptable to both sides."

"While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed to," White House press secretary Sarah Sanders shot back shortly afterward.
Trump gave Congress six months to pass a legislative fix for DACA beneficiaries after announcing the phase-out of the program. Immigration hawks inside and outside of Congress hoped it would be paired with border security measures rather than simply a clean legalization bill. Some would regard any backsliding on the wall by Trump as a significant concession.

"This is a positive step toward the president's strong commitment to bipartisan solutions for the issues most important to all Americans," a White House official said. "The Administration looks forward to continuing these conversations with leadership on both sides of the aisle."

Immigration was a key issue for Trump during the campaign and the wall along the U.S.-Mexican border was a symbol of his hardline position. Trump told the New York Times editorial board last year that he realized the power of this promise when crowds chanted "Build the wall!" at his rallies, something he could do to liven things up if his stump speech was falling flat.
"You know, if it gets a little boring, if I see people starting to sort of, maybe thinking about leaving, I can sort of tell the audience, I just say, ‘We will build the wall!' and they go nuts," Trump said.

Trump also vowed to get rid of DACA and another Obama-era executive action on immigration that never went into effect. "We will immediately terminate President Obama's two illegal executive amnesties, in which he defied federal law and the Constitution to give amnesty to approximately 5 million illegal immigrants," he said in a major immigration speech during the campaign.

But Trump also expressed sympathy for the people who qualified for DACA, suggesting he was open to a compromise. "Well I always understood that with DACA, we need special heart," the president told the Washington Examiner earlier this year, adding "I am somebody with a lot of heart."

"Just, relax and let's let it all play out," Trump continued. "Because I think everyone's going to be happy in the end." He recently returned to a variation of that theme when he tweeted to Dreamers "you have nothing to worry about," reportedly at Pelosi's urging.

The back-and-forth between the White House and congressional Democrats heightens confusion on where the Trump administration will ultimately come down on a DACA legislative fix.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., who has succeededAttorney General Jeff Sessions as the upper chamber's leading immigration hawk, has called for pairing DACA legalization with E-Verify and limits to chain migration. Trump has endorsed a bill by Cotton and Sen. David Perdue, R-Ga., that contains some of these reforms and reduces legal immigration.

"The congressional Democratic leadership has used the DACA class – the so-called ‘Dreamer' amnesty group – as a political football for fifteen years," said Dan Stein, president of the restrictionist Federation for American Immigration Reform, in a statement earlier Wednseday. In order to pass this bill, the Democrats have to be prepared to accept real tradeoffs that respond to the demands of the American people to see our immigration laws enforced and immigration levels reduced."

"Once more we see bad faith," Stein added. "By demanding unconditional amnesty for DACA recipients as well as millions of other illegal aliens who did not even qualify for DACA – while being unwilling to accept anything other than funding for a few more border agents – the Democrats are demonstrating once more that they are happy to just use the DACA class as a political football for partisan advantage."

Schumer, Pelosi say they have deal with Trump to protect 'Dreamers'

    Published September 13, 2017Fox News

Democratic congressional leaders emerged from a meeting with President Donald Trump Wednesday vowing to pursue an agreement protecting immigrants who were brought illegally into the U.S. as children from deportation.

In a joint statement, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said they and Trump had "agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that's acceptable to both sides."

An estimated 800,000 young immigrants are currently covered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, which was formed by former President Barack Obama in 2012. Earlier this month, the Trump administration announced it was winding down the program over the next six months, putting pressure on Congress to pass a legislative solution.

A source briefed on the meeting confirmed to Fox News that Trump and the leaders agreed to pair the DREAM Act, which provides for giving young illegal immigrants eventual citizenship, with some measures enhancing border security. The source said that those measures do not include Trump's long-promised wall across the U.S.-Mexico border.

However, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders issued a tweet denying that the border wall was off the table. A Democratic aide familiar with the conversations told Fox News that Trump "was clear he would continue to fight for the wall separate from this agreement."

Prior to Sanders' tweet, the White House issued a statement describing the meeting as "constructive" and "a positive step toward the President's strong commitment to bipartisan solutions for the issues most important to all Americans." The statement added that the three had discussed "policy and legislative priorities," including "tax reform, border security, DACA, infrastructure and trade."

During a White House meeting with moderate House members from both parties earlier Wednesday, Trump had urged lawmakers to come up with a bipartisan solution.

"We don't want to forget DACA," Trump told the members at the meeting. "We want to see if we can do something in a bipartisan fashion so that we can solve the DACA problem and other immigration problems."

So the President would do an amnesty deal for illegal aliens against the American citizens who voted for him. With his own words, including tweets, it seems to be at the top of his "to do" list. And to have more leaks from democrats whether they are true or not.

Reports: Late-Night Deal Gives Amnesty to Democrats, No Wall to Donald Trump

President Donald Trump surrendered his most powerful political tool for filling his campaign-winning promise of a border wall by agreeing to extend the DACA amnesty for at least 800,000 illegal immigrants in exchange for an unexplained “package of border security” improvements, according to Democratic and media reports.

The amnesty-for-no-wall deal was announced by the Democratic negotiators, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, in a late night statement.

We had a very productive meeting at the White House with the President. The discussion focused on DACA. We agreed to enshrine the protections of DACA into law quickly, and to work out a package of border security, excluding the wall, that’s acceptable to both sides.

    A White House statement said:

President Donald Trump had a constructive working dinner with Senate and House Minority Leaders, Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi as well as Administration officials to discuss policy and legislative priorities. These topics included tax reform, border security, DACA, infrastructure and trade. This is a positive step toward the President’s strong commitment to bipartisan solutions for the issues most important to all Americans. The Administration looks forward to continuing these conversations with leadership on both sides of the aisle.

Trump’s press aide released a subsequent statement, which suggested the president would continue to plead with Democrats for wall funding, even though numerous top Democrats have repeatedly insisted they will never fund the promised border wall.

    @PressSec

While DACA and border security were both discussed, excluding the wall was certainly not agreed

Next, Marc Short, Trump’s congressional aide who recently suggested Trump would trade the DACA amnesty for Democratic support of a tax bill, denied the Democrats’ claim of an amnesty-for-no-wall deal.

Pro-American immigration reformers had hoped that Trump would swap a revived DACA amnesty for his popular goals, such as the merit-immigration RAISE Act, new rules against hiring illegals and a border wall. Instead, they and Trump got only a vague promise of border security improvements, and a Democratic refusal to fund his wall, according to the Democrats.
