Immigrants Skip Shelters, Head for the Border

REYNOSA - Immigrant shelters in Reynosa have not seen an increase in the number of people seeking refuge.

Shelter operators say the immigrants are in a rush to cross the border and surrender to Border Patrol.

The Rev. Hector Silva de Luna runs the shelter Senda de Vida in Reynosa. He said there are few immigrants at the center.

Bryan Duvan, 14, is one of the few at Senda de Vida.

"I'm going to the United States to work ... to help my family get ahead," Duran said.

The young teen feels the responsibility to help his family in Honduras. Duran is like the thousands of illegal immigrants - he seeks a better life.
"My father taught me how to work ... to weed crops. I know they do that (in the U.S.)," he said.

Duran said he endured the perils of the journey.

"This path isn't easy. It's not easy to come down this path of suffering," he said.

A health condition kept him from reaching the border.

"When I'm looking at something it becomes cloudy ... my vision. After that I get a headache," he said.

Jenny Aguilar is another immigrant at Sendas de Vida.

"Necessity is what pushed me to come over. I felt that I had to take care of four kids ... me being a single mother," she said.

Aguilar spent 25 days traveling from Honduras to Reynosa. She would beg for food to give her daughter.

"I wanted to come to America to get my kids ahead," she said crying.

Three of her children stayed in Honduras.

"I miss my kids a lot, but I came here for them ... to give them a better life," she said.

"This isn't easy. Those that are over there ... cherish your time there because time is short and the path is very difficult," Aguilar said.

Sendas de Vida takes in 300 people a month. Each person can stay three days. They must work around the facility.

"I have a dream to cross into the United States," Duran said.

Duran doesn't know what will happen once he crosses the Rio Grande.

Duran, at 14 is he even employable on American farms? I do not think so, could be wrong. With vision problems and headaches, he is not truly a food hand! Oh, someone will get him Medicaid then he can take an Americans job. HTH did Washington screw it up this bad? Oh, we continue to vote for them, they are empowered for life!

These sob stories are made for the media. Too bad those same media don't give a rat's rear end about the foster children for whom care typically ends at age 18. But then those same media do seem much more concerned about illegals than about Americans. I wonder if that has to do with who owns the means of mass communication.
