Illegal immigrants charged or convicted with crimes including sexual assault, arson, homicide and aggravated assault are being released back into U.S. cities and towns because certain sanctuary jurisdictions refuse to comply with ICE detainer requests.
A total of 206 criminal illegal immigrants were released into surrounding communities for the week of January 28 through February 3, according to a report released Monday by the Department of Homeland Security.
“The Travis County sheriff’s decision to deny ICE detainer requests and release back into our communities criminals charged with heinous crimes … is dangerous and should be criminal in itself.”
“U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is making available for public release the non-Federal jurisdictions that release aliens from their custody, notwithstanding that such aliens are subject to a detainer or similar request for custody issued by ICE to that jurisdiction,” the DHS said in its report.
The first Declined Detainer Outcome Report shows the illegal immigrants committed numerous crimes ranging from sexual assault, domestic violence, driving while intoxicated, and even aggravated assault. Some were even charged with robbery. One person from Philadelphia, PA, was even charged, but not yet convicted, with homicide.
New York City released several aliens charged or convicted with assault, drug possession and intimidation. In Marion, Ore., one criminal alien was convicted of indecent exposure and released back into the community.
Los Angeles, Calif, released criminal aliens who were convicted of arson, assault and domestic violence.
Cities in other states which did not release to ICE the criminal aliens included Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Minnesota, Colorado, Iowa, Florida and North Carolina among others.
The most criminal illegals — 142 — were released in Travis County, Texas. That figure accounted for 70 percent of the total number released for the week.
Travis County Sheriff Sally Hernandez has vowed she would not cooperate fully with ICE, and has made good on her campaign promise, according to the Texas Tribune.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott vowed Texas would not stand for sanctuary city policies and blasted the sheriff of Travis County.
“Today’s report from DHS is deeply disturbing and highlights the urgent need for a statewide sanctuary city ban in Texas,” said Abbott in a prepared statement.
“The Travis County sheriff’s decision to deny ICE detainer requests and release back into our communities criminals charged with heinous crimes – including sexual offenses against children, domestic violence and kidnapping – is dangerous and should be criminal in itself. Texas will act to put an end to sanctuary policies that put the lives of our citizens at risk,” Abbott said.
Last month, Abbott cut funding to Travis County over its sanctuary city policy. Abbott cut $1.5 million in grant money to the county after the sheriff said she would limit cooperation with ICE, according to a report in Reuters.
