WASHINGTON (CNN) -- It would cost at least $94 billion to find, detain and remove all 12 million people believed to be staying illegally in the United States, the federal government estimated Wednesday.


Day laborers, who identified themselves as illegal immigrants, talk to a potential employer in Dallas, Texas.

Julie Myers, the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, gave the figure during a hearing before a Senate committee Wednesday.

She acknowledged it was based on "very rough calculations."

An ICE spokesman later said the $94 billion did not include the cost of finding illegal immigrants, nor court costs -- dollar amounts that are largely unknowable.

He said the amount was calculated by multiplying the estimated 12 million people by the average cost of detaining people for a day: $97. That was multiplied by the average length of detention: 32 days.

ICE officials also considered transportation costs, which average $1,000 per person.


Finally, the department looked at personnel costs, bringing the total to roughly $94 billion.

The statistic is likely to become one more piece of fodder in the heated debate between the Bush administration -- which has fought for a "path to citizenship" for people who have lived peaceably in the United States -- and those who want to see more aggressive enforcement of immigration laws, up to, and including, the deportation of all illegal immigrants.

So thats like 0.1% of what it will cost to let them stay and keep getting social services, free healthcare, etc.

Actually, it wouldn't cost that much. Once they started a roundup, alot of them would scatter on their own.

The services alone that these people get monthly is stagering.... It is the federal goverment trying to scare us into caving in for them not doing thier jobs

How come the government talks about fining companies now that hire Illegal Immigrants... but no one talks about fining the Federal government for thier part in this dabockle ... I know, I know.... your thinking Airborne are you out of your mind... we would just be fining ourselves

No... the Federal Government needs to be fined... with the money to go back to the states to clean up any mess that was caused by President Bushes open door policy.

We dont need pay more taxes.... we need to take away money that congress's gready hands play with on pork barrel projects.

And I have to tell you... I dont care what it's going to cost but it needs to happen and happen yesterday.

seperating families - I dont care... if they are stupid enough to leave a child as an anchor baby... to me they are an unfit parent

If the federal government gets serious .. these people.. a lot of them will self deport

There are so many options to this I don't know where to begin.

1.Remove the 12 million now for 100 billion dollars rather than wait another 10-15 years until its 30 million illegals at 250 billion dollars.

2.Instead of using our tax dollars to feed,educate,medicate and incarcerate the illegals use it to rid us of them.

3.The tens of billions of dollars they take out of our economy and send home every year will stop thus helping to fund the removal.

4.Use part of the money that currently goes to bi-lingual education and signage to help.

5.The taxes that employers will now have to pay because they will be hiring Americans will help too.

Can anyone else think of any more ways for the gov't to get the money to help fund the "Send them home" drive?

As others have said previously-start cracking down on some and word will get out and self deportation will happen.

WOW thats a good deal and money well spent !

They will self deport if benefits & job magnets are removed,And if our government would stop debating amnesty which gives them hope and keeps them holding on...........

Cancel a Halaburton contract and deportation is paid for........
