TX - Smuggler uses spikes in attempt to elude Border Patrol

Two government vehicles sustained flat tires when a human smuggler attempted to flee, according to U.S. Border Patrol.

A vehicle loaded with 14 immigrants was seen in Pharr by a concerned citizen.

Border Patrol agents responded to the area on Friday, April 3 around 1:25 pm.

When agents attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver fled from authorities.

That’s when the driver was seen throwing spikes on the road resulting in two vehicles coming to a stop.

A helicopter was flown in to search for the driver and immigrants.

A 14-year-old, identified as the driver, and 14 immigrants suspected of being in the country without documentation were apprehended, Border Patrol confirmed.

The vehicle he was driving was reported stolen in Mission prior to the bailout.

Authorities said additional spikes were found inside the vehicle.

The juvenile will be charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle by the Mission Police Department.

The Texas Department Of Public Safety will charge the driver for using the spikes after an arrest warrant is obtained, according to Border Patrol.

No injuries were sustained, but two government vehicles received holes in tires due to the caltrops.
