At Hill hearing, immigrants call on Obama to overturn Arizona law
Five immigrants from Mexico painted a picture of fear and hopelessness over the recently passed Arizona immigration law at a special congressional hearing Thursday.

The Arizona residents said the law will empower fellow Arizonans who already hold prejudices against immigrants to create a culture of fear and violence in the state.

    Meredith McDermott/Hearst Newspapers
Catherine Figueroa testifies on Capitol Hill Thursday, crying as she recalls her parents arrest when she was younger.

The witnesses — all women, some as young as 10 years old — called on President Obama to get rid of the bill passed back in April through emotional testimonies in front of members of Congress, including Rep. Raúl Grijalva, D-Ariz, who called for the ad hoc committee hearing.

Silvia Rodriguez, a 23-year-old graduate of Arizona State University who has been living in the state with an expired visa since she was two years old, said she has lived under a blanket of fear her entire life of being deported.

"I've never been called to or referred to as American. The only time I felt proud was when President Obama won his presidency, and for him to not step up and fulfill his promises really, really breaks a lot of promises," Rodriguez said.

Catherine Figueroa, a 10-year-old girl whose parents were arrested and detained for three months, said through tears that she lives in fear of law enforcement agents, and called on President Obama to help repeal the law passed in her state.

"I want to tell President Obama to stop putting parents in jail," Figueroa said through tears. "All they want is a better life for their kids."

The others who testified added that the law will tarnish the already broken relationship immigrants have with law enforcement officers in the state, saying it will overcrowd jails and take time away from police officers who should be focusing on real criminals.

"We are living in a dangerous time in Arizona," said Sylvia Herrera, a researcher in Arizona who has collected videos and written testimony of abuses against immigrants in the state. "If President Obama does not intervene on SB1070, the whole country will be overcome with a climate of change that is going to be pure hate."

Herrera said that although the law has not yet gone into effect, Arizonans have already taken it upon themselves to enforce it, asking people who either do not speak English or look like they are of Hispanic origins to produce documentation that proves they are citizens.

Alma Mendoza, a former victim of domestic violence, said the new law will make it impossible for female immigrants to seek help in domestic violence situations for fear of deportation and separation from their children.

"This is a situation where everyone suffers, women and children alike," Mendoza said through tears. "As soon as this law is enforced, people will lose all confidence and trust in the police."

Celia Alejandra Alvarez Herrera — who suffered physical abuse by law enforcement agents when she was arrested in 2009 during a raid at her workplace — said the immigration law passed in April is painting the wrong picture of what America stands for to the youngest generation of Americans.

"They say that the children are the future, what is it that we are teaching them," Alvarez Herrera said through a translator.

Grijalva said he called the hearing in order to bring a sense of urgency to his colleagues to help repeal the bill and called on the Obama administration to "take a proactive role to enter [the bill] into the fray."

    TX; SOB

When the U.S. Congress gives Mexican President Calderon a standing ovation for his anti law enforcement remarks, you can tell whose side Congress is on.
Consider the irony. All the discussions going on behind closed doors regarding immigration reform. Only the poor criminals get to tell their sad stories of oppression. Where are the American citizen VICTIMS of illegal aliens? Where are the millions of unemployed who have a LEGAL RIGHT to jobs currently held by illegal workers? Where are the millions of VICTIMS of ID THEFT who spend months trying to salvage their records from the effects of illegal aliens?

This administration is so twisted and evil. Rewards for criminals, tax the citizens to hell.

Not to sound chauvinistic in any way, but it's real pathetic when they have to resort to using female tears and kids to try and sway opinions. That's really scrapping the bottom of the barrel. Then to call an illegal an American, let alone even allowing them in to the hearing. I'm suddenly feeling very dirty.

They need to man up and try to defend their side like men.

Maybe thats because YOU ARE NOT AN AMERICAN! You have been here since you were 2 on an expired visa. And you went college? I'd like to know how you registered without a proper id. I would think that an adult would know the difference between illegal aliens and legal immigrants.
RIP Butterbean! We miss you and hope you are well in heaven.-- Your ALIPAC friends

How about "I fought the law and the law won?" We're teaching them it's not ok to break the laws and we want enforcement NOW!

What are you teaching them Alvarez?

Shouldn't the Congress people who put on this dog and pony show be arrested for aiding and abetting a federal crime?
