Three sought in Virginia slaying are found, arrested in city

MERIDEN - Three fugitives wanted in the slaying of a 24 year-old Virginia man were arrested by city police and U.S. marshals late last week after an investigation found that they had been staying at a Catlin Street residence.

Sgt. Leonard Caponigro said in a press release that the men - Sebastian Cortez Hernandez, 25, and brothers Jose Ontiveros, 27, and Santos Ontiveros, 24 - were arrested Thursday just before 11 p.m. They had come to Connecticut after allegedly killing Manassas, Va., resident Omar Florencio-Vazquez on May 31.

The men, all of Manassas, have been charged as fugitives of justice and are expected to be extradited to Virginia to face charges of murder and use of a firearm in a felony.

Police in Manassas said the fugitives were allegedly involved in shooting Florencio-Vazquez several times at a local shopping center as he was leaving with three relatives. The men were members of a group of 10 men that had beaten Florencio-Vazquez in mid-May, Manassas police said.

Meriden police said the men were located during an investigation by U.S marshals and the Immigration and Naturalization Service. They had been given shelter by relatives in the city, police said.

Manassas Police Sgt. Tim Neumann said detectives discovered during the investigation that Sebastian Cortez Hernandez is an illegal alien who had previously been deported for committing a felony.

In June 2003, he was arrested by the Prince William County Police Department in Virginia on charges of gang participation and other criminal activity. He was deported to Mexico four months later after court proceedings.

Local residents Jorge and Cindy Hernandez, of 21 Catlin St., were arrested on charges of aiding and abetting a fugitive and appeared in Meriden Superior Court Friday.

Court records show that Cindy Hernandez, 29, was still in custody on a $50,000 bond Sunday afternoon and is due back in court on June 17, where she is expected to enter a plea. Information on Jorge Hernandez, 23, was not immediately available Sunday afternoon.

Shouldn't they face three charges of aiding and abetting a fugitive and a charge of aiding and abetting an illegal alien?
