A vehicle eluding Border Patrol agents about 9 p.m. Tuesday got stuck in the Rio Grande near the Asarco plant, but U.S. officials could not get involved because the vehicle was on the Mexican side.
Fire Department officials said they could not help in rescuing the occupants because the vehicle became stuck outside their jurisdiction.

It was not known why the vehicle was eluding the agents or how many people were inside the vehicle.

El Paso fire officials said the Border Patrol had been watching the motorist for more than an hour Tuesday night as Juárez firefighters struggled to pull the vehicle out.

Details were sketchy late Tuesday, but it is common for drug transporters to try to elude U.S. authorities by attempting to cross back into Mexico.
