Woman arrested on suspicion of smuggling

ROMA - A Rio Grande City woman was arrested about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday on suspicion of trying to smuggle two Mexican boys across the Roma-Miguel Alemán International Bridge, U.S. customs officials said in a news release.

Martha Nelly Guzman, 30, tried passing off the undocumented children as her sons as they walked into the United States, according to authorities. After a routine immigration check, officials determined the boys were Mexican citizens and were not her children.

Guzman, a U.S. citizen, was jailed pending an appearance before a U.S. magistrate.

The boys, brothers ages 1 and 9, were released to Miguel Alemán immigration authorities.
