I.C.E. agents arrest 25 foreign nationals in Vegas criminal enforcement sweep

US customs, immigration agents arrest 25 foreign nationals in Vegas criminal enforcement sweep

    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
    July 01, 2015 - 4:18 pm EDT

LAS VEGAS — Federal officials say 25 foreign citizens including convicted child sex offenders and drug traffickers were arrested in the Las Vegas area during a four-day operation last week.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced Wednesday that most of those arrested had multiple prior criminal convictions, including 13 on charges also including child molestation, driving under the influence resulting in death and possessing stolen mail.

Daniel Bible, an ICE official in Salt Lake City, says four of those arrested were previously deported and will face felony federal prosecution because they returned to the U.S.

ICE says the people arrested Thursday through Sunday came from the countries of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, the Philippines and Cuba.

Officials say those who aren't facing criminal prosecution remain in bureau custody pending administrative processing for deportation.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV News3LV) – Child sex offenders and convicted drug traffickers are among the 25 criminal aliens arrested during a four-day operation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Clark County that concluded Sunday.

The enforcement action was carried out by ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations officers and focused on individuals who pose a public safety threat, according to a news release.

Of the 25 foreign nationals arrested during the operation, more than 20 have multiple prior criminal convictions. Thirteen of those taken into custody are convicted felons whose criminal histories include such offenses as drug trafficking, possession of stolen mail, sexual assault and DUI.

Four were previously deported criminal aliens who now face felony federal prosecution for re-entry after deportation.

    Those arrested include:

•A 43-year-old previously deported Mexican national whose list of criminal history includes convictions for child molestation, and a DUI resulting in death.

•A 20-year old legal permanent resident from Mexico with a conviction for drug trafficking.

•A previously deported 49-year old Mexican national convicted of possessing of stolen mail.

“This operation exemplifies ICE’s ongoing commitment to targeting convicted criminals and public safety threats for apprehension and removal,” said Daniel Bible, field office director for ERO Salt Lake City. “By taking these individuals off our streets and removing them from our communities, we are making Clark County safer for everyone.”

The foreign nationals arrested during the operation include citizens of Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, the Philippines and Cuba.

Those who are not being criminally prosecuted will be processed administratively for removal from the United States. Those who have outstanding orders of deportation, or who returned to the United States illegally after being deported, are subject to immediate removal from the country.

The remaining individuals are in ICE custody awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge, or pending travel arrangements for removal in the near future.
