Coast Guard repatriates 39 Cuban migrants
MIAMI -- The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Kodiak Island repatriated 39 Cuban migrants, from three separate interdictions at sea within the past four days, to Bahia de CabaƱas, Cuba, Sunday.
In one incident, the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Dependable located a go-fast vessel suspected of smuggling migrants about 15 miles north of Dog Rocks, Bahamas, Wednesday. The vessel reportedly stopped without incident and boarding team members were launched to inspect the vessel. Once aboard, crewmembers determined there were 32 migrants and two suspected smugglers on the go-fast.
The migrants were later transferred to the crew of the Kodiak Island and the suspected smugglers to U.S. Border Patrol officers.
Once aboard Coast Guard cutters, all migrants are provided with food, water, shelter and necessary medical attention.
The Kodiak Island is a 110-foot patrol boat homeported in St. Petersburg, Fla.
The Dependable is a 210-foot medium-endurance cutter homeported in Cape May, N.J
