U.S. deports more than 31,000 Honduran immigrants

TEGUCIGALPA, Aug 13, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The Honduran interim immigration authorities said Thursday that the U.S. government had deported 31,602 Honduran immigrants so far this year.

Among the deported Hondurans, there were 30,413 adults and 1,189 minorities, according to Nelson Mejia, director of the Honduran interim immigration authorities.

The number of Honduran immigrants deported by U.S. authorities has increased in recent years: 22,000 in 2007 as opposed to 24,666 in 2006. In 2005, only 18,941 had been deported.

Many Hondurans remained here after their visas expired. We have many here in South Florida.
