VA: Immigration law supporters doubt effectiveness of boycot
Immigration law supporters doubt effectiveness of boycott
Associated Press - August 28, 2007 10:35 AM ET
MANASSAS, Va. (AP) - Business leaders in Prince William County are divided over a boycott of non-immigrant businesses will work.
Immigrants and advocacy groups are promoting the boycott as a way to protest a measure aimed at denying services to illegal immigrants. Organizers are asking immigrants to stay away from small businesses that don't support the effort, as well as large ones like Wal-Mart, McDonald's, Giant supermarkets and the Potomac Mills and Manassas malls.
Businesses that support immigrants are being asked to display green signs in their windows.
But there's disagreement within the immigrant community over whether it will work. The group Mexicans Without Borders hopes economic pressure will work. But another group of Latino businessmen opposes the boycott and favors negotiations with the county.
The president of anti-illegal immigration group Help Save Manassas, Greg Letiecq, says it unfairly punishes businesses.
Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart says the boycott will have little impact.

Activist groups’ boycott targets Potomac Mills and Manassas Mall
Prince William County -
Critics of Prince William County’s illegal immigration resolution banded together Monday to announce a boycott of malls and major chain stores in the fast-growing suburban community. The weeklong effort seeks to show united opposition to recent county proposals to deny services to illegal immigrants and speed deportation of those who break the law, said organizer Ricardo Juarez.
“We are asking people of goodwill to stay away from Potomac Mills Mall, Manassas Mall and the major chain stores and restaurants in the county,â€

Here they go again. Geez, I'm tired of their demands, rallies and boycotts. But then, I am all for boycotting all companies and businesses that support and hire illegals! I think our impact will be the best of the two.
We need to make sure we don't go to any of the green stores. I don't live there, but they may start it in other places. That would be nice since it will show us which places to avoid and contact.I'd rather die living then live dying!

Prince William official fires back at boycott
Prince William official fires back at boycott
Associated Press - August 29, 2007 10:05 AM ET
MANASSAS, Va. (AP) - Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart is urging supporters of stricter immigration laws to answer a boycott of non-immigrant business in the county.
Opponents of a measure seeking to ban services to illegal immigrants are keeping away from non-immigrant-owned businesses through Monday. They're also planning a rally on Sunday and a work stoppage in October.
But Stewart is urging community members who support the new policies to avoid stores and restaurants that support the immigrants.
The anti-illegal-immigration group Help Save Manassas has been taking note of businesses that are posting signs in support of the boycott.
